Please help! I just got this computer, it runs Windows 98. When the system starts up, I get a message stating that no mouse is connected. I have installed a new PS/2 mouse port, 5 pin single row onto the motherboard. This did not correct the problem. The correct drivers are there in the device menu but states that it is not being recognized.
Thanks for any help!!!
Did you try a serial or USB mouse?

Check in your BIOS to make sure that the ps/2 mouse is enabled...

I have tried a serial port mouse but when the computer starts up it still gives me the message about the PS/2 mouse. I am not sure how to check the BIOS. Can anyone help?
Ok, when you are first booting you should see a message on the screen "Hit xx to enter setup" (usually <del>, <f2>, <f1> )...when there just look around for a listing for the PS/2 mouse...it should say either enabled or auto....if you can't get in or can find the listing, post back with the motherboard and BIOS maker and we'll try to figure out where to look.

OK, I went into the setup. I didn't see anything that said PS/2. There were somethings that were disabled, such as PCI/VGA Palette Snoop; System BIOS cacheable; and Virus Warning. Help....
ROM PCI/ISA BIOS (ZA5LDPAT) Is this the BIOS maker?

It appears that either the PS/2 port or its connection to the MB is bad.
If this is the case, then you will continue to get that message.
Does either a USB or serial mouse work?

The PS/2 mouse port is brand new, just bought it 2 days ago. How can I find out if the MB is bad? Any other suggestions? I don't have a USB mouse and don't see a connection for one. I do have a serial port mouse but can't get the system to recognize that it is there either. I have tried everything that I can think of, that is why I am posting here for help. Thanks for all suggestions.

Why, Lord, no. I may not be that computer savvy, but I do know better than that. Thanks for asking, I guess some people wouldn't know.

please don't hit " reply with quotes " , just use the big blue " Post a reply " when you make a post.
Next, i have a siomilar older Epox board, and in order to use the PS/2 connector -you have to make sure that the red wire on the cable goes to pin #1- it should look like this;
1.RED wire
2.BLUE wire
3.GREEN wire
4.NC
5.YELLOW wire
so make sure your cable is not reversed.

Open Device Manager and check for a USB controller. If it's there, make sure it has no problems. Then look on the back of the computer for a rectangular slot. That's the USB port.
If no USB controller is listed in Dev. Mgr. and there's no slot on the computer, then it's not USB equipped.
Also, check Dev. Mgr. for any problems with serial ports COM 1 and/or COM 2, and check that they're both enabled in BIOS.
If there's a USB controller with no problems in Dev. Mgr., and/or the COM 1 and 2 ports have no problems in Dev. Mgr. and they're enabled in BIOS, and you cannot get a mouse to work with either, then remove all references to either/both from Dev. Mgr. in Safe mode and restart your computer. Windows should recognize them and reload their drivers.
If that does not work, then do a reformat and reinstall of Windows.
If still no luck, then it's possible that the motherboard is bad and needs to be replaced.

Sorry about the reply with quotes.
My PS/2 port wiring is different.
1. White
2. Red
3. Nothing
4. Black
5. Green
Any suggestions? If I do need to change the wiring, I do I do this without tearing it up in the process?

Hmmm, i just pulled the manual from Epox on your board ( via the system id you provided-EP-5BVPXB ) and the pinout for the PS/2 port is exactly what i posted earlier.
Are you sure this is the correct motherboard id?

Yes, it is the correct motherboard id.
I just bought this port for it, the computer store never asked me anything about my motherboard.
When this computer was bought, I saw where the mouse did work. But after getting it home, the mouse no longer worked. I have tried everything I can think of to get it fixed. It had a PS/2 mouse with an seial adapter on it plugged into COM1. But I couldn't get it to work. So when I opened the tower and got to looking I saw where the pins were for a PS/2 port and went out to buy one thinking that would fix the problem. No luck yet. I am going to take the PS/2 port back and tell the store the correct pinout that I need, can you tell me if there was anyway that a mouse could have run on this without a PS/2 port and still not get the message stating that no mouse is detected? Thanks.
And there is no USB port attached to the motherboard, but the pins are there for it. Do I need one at this point?
