Hi have just installed Dlink ADSL wireless router to my Phillips LS1000 desk top computor which had a wireless network card pre installed.

Set up went ok so I then tried to load settings (using wireless settings in control panel) onto memory stick to transfer to Toshiba lap top. The first instruction is to plug memory stick into wireless router .... no USB but i carried on seems settings are on memeory stick but dont think they transferred to laptop.

However Toshiba and desktop PC inform me that wireless network is in range when i turn them on which is my network . What concerns me is that it state s that this network is configured for open access etc etc . When I set up the router I chose wep and enetered a 10 digit code thinking this would ensure security would be Ok.
Guess Im being a complete dummy here ... would appreciate some help ...thanks

Have you set up the wirless setting in your laptop the same as your router, i.e put the same WEP key in you laptop wireless setting. You need the same WEP keys in all wireless kit in your household to stay secure.

Thats part of the problem I havnt been asked to put wep key in manualy becuase I think settings were on memory stick.
When I go into network connections / properties / wireless networks I see 2 connections the named one is small with a red X on top of it Im guessing that one is not enabled but I dont see it in selection screen to use it when I log on .

Firstly you dont install a router to your computer, thats the incorrect wording. You instsall a wireless netowkring card on your computers to talk to the router.

OK, so are you trying to load the settings of you router from your desktop PC onto a stick to transfer to your laptop? Why? You shouldnt have to really do this.
Both computers should pick up the router as long as the wireless cards on both computers are installed. You should see all SSID's ( Service Set Identifier - Name of router, whatever it has been called) without doing anything. All you need to ensure access to them is that the WEP keys are all the same on each wireless device, and that should be it.

Yes sorry I understand I am not explaining this very well. I read and in the network connections it give you the options to load settings onto to a stick so I presumed thats what I had to do. I did a system restore and re entered the router and my ip settings onto the desktop and internet access is fine on both desk top and lap top. But connection informations says this is an unsecure connection etc as this time I havnt enabled wep or wpa. Do I need to do this if so how do I do it please .

Ok the easiest way to go around this is to be "hard" wired to set WEP up, because if you enable WEP on you router you will loose connection to it. But you can do it if you remember your setting, but to safe guard yourself use a cable.
Being hard wired means of running a ethernet network cable to your router from the PC or laptop. This way you are not using wirelss so you can do anything to the router, within reason. So ensure you are connected to the router via a network cable, the IP addresse to type in your browser would be something like 192.168.1.1 etc. to access your router. Goto the wireless setup up page in the router and enable WEP. Then you will have two options either use ascii or hex as your key. I used hex (64bit) where you can choose from 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,a,b,c,d,e,f. Enter 10 digits from this range and apply the settings. On a ADSL 604 router dont forget to go in the commands area and save settings.
Disconnect the nework cable and enable the wireless network cards on your laptop and PC, now put these same WEP settings into your laptop and your desktop wireless network cards computer, hey presto! communication flows!!!! well it should do.
