If I have to replace a power supply in a system that matters, I won't settle for anything but Antec or Enermax. Now I have an old 500mhz pc that needs a power supply. The case won't accomodate one of the new PSU's with the extra cabling, etc. What brands would be safe if buying used (300W)but cheap?

Unless your system is really old, there are only 2 types of power supplies for desktop PC's AT or ATX. You should be able to get an ANTEC or Enermax.

I could but they aren't as inexpensive. Even on Ebay :-) So am looking at other brands. I have an Antec 350, NIB, but it has all the newer cabling that is excessive for the old pc. Just not a lot of room to work with in this case.

Cannibalize.
Find another old PC with a functional power supply that meets your needs. You don't want to spend much money and you don't need new tech. That might be your only choice.
