View Full Version : Upgrade PSU Thoughts Wanted

I'm currently running a machine that's far too crappy to mention. Based on an Athlon XP 2000+. My north bridge fan is dead, and my hard drive is starting to make noises that aren't comforting. So, the time has come to upgrade. However, as I've mentioned before, I'm a poor guy, so I wanted to rape my current machine for as much as possible and limit the total cost to around $350. The following is what the upgrade will include when all is said and done:

Mobo: Gigabyte K8NS
Proc: Athlon 64 3200+
RAM: 1.5gb (1gb PC2700, 512mb PC3200)
HD: Seagate 160gb SATA150 drive
Opticals: Generic 52X CD-ROM, generic 48/24/48 CD-RW
Floppy: 3.5"
Vid Card: GeForce MX400 (64mb)

Notice the colossal crappiness of my vid card :) I'll use it for the time being, but if I were to upgrade it would be to a mid-range like a 6600GT.

I generally do not use my system for graphically or processor intensive stuff. I currently have a powmax 400W PSU. Is that going to be enough to handle the meager load I'm putting on it, or would y'all recommend something a bit more robust?

Ok, the list is kind of confusing. Can't make heads or tails of it (but it might be because I'm tired). Can you please separate your list into what you have and what you need? That will help us tremendously...

I'd drop down to this. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103537) It will run everything you need and save you $50. Then put some of that money to this MOBO. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813152049)

Also 1 gig of ram is adaquate.

Sorry guys. the only things I'm buying new are the mobo, processor, and the HD. Everything else is already here, I just want to make sure the psu i already have will run everything without a problem. Judging from hockey man's (my girlfriend was just as angry as you, btw) response, I should be okay.

Although it just occured to me that the likelyhood of my current PSU having SATA support is very slim. Bummer.

Your current PSU may run all your new hardware just fine. The only way to test it is to actually try it.

I'm afraid you'll also need a new vid card. The new round of mobo's and chipsets don't support AGP anymore. And you don't want them to, either. AGP is not a good idea for a new system anymore, so go PCIe x16 this time around. Take a look at my sticky (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=39018) for lots of good hardware recommendations, as well as the new addition of a good cheap vid card: the Radeon X550 series. $70 gets you in on the new tech as well as buying you a good vid card upgrade. But it is $70 more that you'll have to spend unfortunately.

Another thing - I don't know how much money you have left to sink into this project (especially with having to buy a new vid card) but consider increasing the new HDD size to 200GB. They're only a tad more than 160GB hard drives, and they gives you more GB per dollar. This is just an after thought.
