I've had my PC for sometime. My friend built it for me. I have two 256MB DDR PC3200 memory sticks, but under properties in the "My Computer" folder it displays that I have 448MB Ram. Why is this? I've been using the computer for almost a year with it like this. No problems, but I just don't understand how it is 448mbs and not 512mbs. Can anyone provide an answer to this? Thanks.

Hi Lsportline43, and welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums.
This is because you have onboard video and some of the system ram is allocated to the onboard video card. 64MB to be exact.
512-64=448MB

Just a general peeve of mine...I have never liked those systems where part of your main system memory is reserved specifically for video. Even when it's because there's onboard video (no separate video card present) it personally strikes me as being a cheapskate workaround for having separate, dedicated video memory.

I agree Joea64. But I am a gamer and run other graphic intensive programs that require a dedicated video card and a lot of system ram. But if all you do is surf the internet and check your email, then onboard video is all you really need. Or if you don't have the money for a video card when the system was built or purchased, then it is a good thing to have until you can get the cash for that shiny new 7800GTX. :p :)

I see... So does that mean that there will be 512 MB of ram if I install a separate video card?

Yes. If you put in a dedicated v-card, all the system ram will be allocated to the system. :)
