I am putting in a new motherboard and memory in an old Pentium MMX for a friend. When I start the computer, it gets as far as the memory test and freezes at 640k, and escape or del do not do anything (neither does anything else) I have installed 1 stick of 128 MB pc-100 168pin DIMM on a BCM VP1541. I know this is ancient stuff, but it is an eldery friend's computer who can't afford a new one. What should i do? Thanks!
That motherboard supports both EDO and SDRAM memory modules, and it may be set for EDO. Look for something either in BIOS or a jumper on the MB to select either memory type.
Also, make sure the memory module is securely inserted. Sometimes it needs a good push to properly seat.

Welcome
Appeaars that during memory test you are hitting
a block at 64MB. The Mboard isn't accepting a memory
stick in excess of 64MB per slot.
If a person had access to the manual for that board
there is probably a chart that shows memory module size
limitations.
Luck.
