Is it possible that adding an extra 1 GB of RAM (added Centon RAM) could cause my system to perform more slowly?? My setup is below...
Cooler Master Cavalier Case
400 Watt Power Supply
Elite Group ECS NForce-939 Motherboard
AMD 3000 Winchester CPU
Asylum GeForce™ FX 5200 (256 mb) Video Card
4 x 512 MB RAM (2 sticks of The aforementioned Centon and 2 Sticks of Kingston Value Ram)

Are all the sticks double-sided?

What does double-sided mean?? Sorry if that sounds stupid, I just have never heard the term referring to RAM.

If you look at the sticks of RAM (aka "modules") do they have RAM chips on both sides of the sticks?
The reason I ask is because the K8 core (prior to revision E) does indeed slow down when 4 double-sided sticks of RAM are installed. It has to do with the memory manager in the onboard memory controller, and the fact that it can't cache all the memory addresses without page flipping and all that complex stuff.
So if all your sticks are double-sided, then return that Centon stuff and get single-sided sticks, or upgrade your CPU to at least a Venice core. Hmmm... maybe this is a good reason to upgrade... ;) :p
