using thunderbird over a wireless network

I have an ad-hoc network. My pc has a bb connection and i share it over my wireless network. All is fine except when I try to access my emails on my laptop over the network it says failed to connect to server. I can transfer files and use the net ok, its just getting me emails it doesnt like. It does the same on outlook express.

Anyone got any ideas?
