Hello everyone,

I am taking a class in Computer Hardware & Operating Systems online. I am working on a project that wants me to use the backup utility that is supposed to be a part of Windows XP. However, when I went to system tools menu there is nothing that says backup utility. There are 3 computers in my household and none of them have them. I tried going to adding windows compents and it was not there either. Also tried searching for Ntbackup.exe and that search produced nothing as well. The project talks about backing up to a floppy disk. Could it be that I don't have the backup utility because I don't have a floppy disk drive? If so, is there a way to do a backup without a floppy disk drive? I have a cd-rom drive? Someone please help me as my professor is not giving me any suggestions or directions. Thank you.

The backup utility is not installed in XP Home, by default--who knows why. It is for XP Pro. To install and use it, you'll need the XP Home CD. Instructions can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/bott_03july14.mspx

"The project talks about backing up to a floppy disk"
I hope this is only the first tiny step and that it takes you on to MUCH bigger things.
"MS Backup" has a couple of serious drawbacks:
1. It skips too many Windows program files because the backup is being made within Windows whilst it is in use.
2. The backup so made can only be restored from within Windows, so if Windows won't boot it's useless just when you need help.
A bit like a fire hosereel that can only be used from within a building when it is on fire and totally inaccessible.
