Hi

I have a very weird problem. I have setup my computer and through one network socket i have connected it to the internet. The other is connected to my Wireless access point. I have setup the wired machine as a ICS system so i have set this up and it should work fine. But here comes the weird problem, My wired machine can talk to the wireless access point, my laptop can detect the wireless access point and connect to it. But the laptop cannot see my pc and my pc cannot see the laptop... so whats going on here. Both the pcs are in the same subnet however i have set my laptop to a fixed ip as it just sat at "Acquiring Network Address" for hours if i dont.

If anyone could help me sort this out it would be great!

Thanks in advance

Jamie

I am not sure if I follow your network setup, but here is just a thought. Have you considered a wireless router?

Do i need a wireless router? I have ICS running on my xp machine so my pc is running as a dhcp server so shouldnt the wireless access point just connect to the network and pass packets to it?

What you need is that Easy button I saw on a commercial the other day... Why would you think the wireless AP would just pass the traffic? Was their any manual that came with it that you could read? If you have to assign a static IP why would you think that is passing the DHCP traffic? I'm corn fuzed. Where are you getting two network "sockets" from? Does the main PC have two network cards? What is the default gateway of the PC doing ICS? I'll bet it sends all it's traffic out to the internet.

My pc has two network cards. One connected to the lan the other connected to the WAN. There is a manual but it doesnt answer this question. I just dont understand why my wireless laptop cannot see the rest of the network, i have had to provide a static ip because when it trys to gain a ip from dhcp it just sits there with "Requiring network address". The ips are as follows:

Main pc running ICS
IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

Wireless Access point
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

Linux box connected via cable
IP: 192.168.0.3
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Laptop over wireless
IP (when set staticly): 192.168.0.4
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

So as far as i believe the wireless laptop should be able to see the other machines... however it can not, it says its connected to the wireless access point. But nothing seems to go anywhere when i try to ping my 192.168.0.1 machine.

You need to bridge the connections. This is a kludgy setup that is bound to fail and give you all kinds of trouble. But if you decide to spend the rest of your life playing with your network instead of actually using it, that's the way to go.

ok, so i need to bridge the wireless access point to my pc?

If you persist in this setup, you will have to bridge the connections on the PC that has 2 connections.

I reiterate, this is not a wise thing to do. You have to leave the one PC on all of the time. Any heavy usage by the wireless PC can give the hardwired PC fits, including lock-ups and data loss.

So you have been warned....
