I recently switched to a "pay" AV application after using AVG free for quite awhile. I now use Kapersky. AVG was and is good, but I'm running a business of this PC now and felt Kapersky was the best choice.

Hi there

I forgot to add Kapersky to the poll :p
Anyway is Kapersky better than AVG? and is it free?
Thankyou.

I use Avast Home Edition on all non business PC's and Avast Professional on all business PC's. It's fast, it covers everything and it's reasonably priced. No flase positves.

Kapersky has no free version other than the usual 30 day trial. Some consider it expensive but it's actually cheaper than the Norton or McAfee equivalents--which I would NEVER use anyway, even if they were free.

Is it better than AVG? Look I like AVG and Avast. They're very good products. But I had to choose a "pay" version and I trialed the two that I thought were the best candidates--NOD32 (you forgot that one too) and Kapersky. Kapersky won. Its effectiveness is a few tenths of a percentage point higher (no big deal), the interface is simpler (I prefer that), and it updates multiple times a day flawlessly. If there is a nasty bug out there, I want protection on this box now, not later.

I've had no false positives...so far ;)

Avast free is what I'm running on XP+2000 pro. Great lil' piece of software.

I also like Sygate free. Cool.

F-Prot, Kaspersky and NOD32 are probably the best all around IMHO.

Wow, no one uses McAfee? I certainly don't know if it's the best, but it's certainly one of the most popular.

It may be widely used but like Norton which is even more popular, it is quite resource-intensive and definitely may slow your PC.

I used to use McAfee. I switched to AVAST.
From personal experience, McAfee is faster than Norton and is better overall.
It's very good, but still too much of a system hogger.

McAfee is a dump truck compared to NOD32, Avast, AVG, and Kapersky. Norton is a whole fleet of dump trucks.

Would you have a dump truck in your house?

Yeah, I'd have one to pick up garbage.

It was the first... Back in the days when the internet had not yet blossomed and BBS was the thing, McAfee was out there as shareware that was never too picky about payment... Everything ran lean in those days since a lot of computers had 1Meg RAM and 40Meg hard drives and McAfee was quite lean too... It has become as bloated as Norton, but I still have a slightly more positive attitude about it because of those early days... I doubt if the same people are even still involved, but the name brings back those memories...

I like AntiVir. It's usually updated daily. The only bummer is their server sometimes gets overloaded and the updates are downloaded in bytes per second (and I'm on cable and have recently gone over the 1000kbs mark on some servers).

I've been to a lot of crack sites that are loaded with viruses and that program is going off like fireworks on the 4th of July. I haven't gotten a single virus yet... Knock, Knock

Love the analogy!

Anybody out there uses Trend Micro's Pc-cillin? I used to use Norton, but it would slow my computer down, so when I bought my mobo two years ago and it came with a Pc-cillin trial for 3 months I gave it a try. I've been using it ever since and I like it. It updates several times a day, and is very light to use.

You can take the analogy a number of ways. Yeah, a dump truck will take the grabage out...but it's big and slow. A fleet of dump truck will remove the garbage...and your house with it.

Me, I would rather have something smaller, faster, and more efficient...that does the job well, leaves me room to live, and leaves my house standing. :p

Ive been looking around at the different antivirus software u guys have been discussing and based on screenshots and reviews i think im goin to go w the avast. Was wondering if the professional edition is worth the money(dont mind payin ,just want the best protection)and also i saw it came w what they call a network shield, but i was kinda wanting a full featured firewall,or is this network shield proficient? There is a firewall in my dsl router so maybe the shield would be ok.Ive been usin Norton, need i say more Norton= major system hog and im so tired of ccapp not responding when i shut down(Norton)among all the other crap.

If you are going to pay for it, I suggest NOD32 or Kapersky... The main advantage to Avast is that it is free...

If the "shield" is a firewall, then it is what you need... If it is not, then you need a firewall... The router firewall is not enough...

Try before you buy is a wonderful thing. You can trial NOD32 for 30 days, follow that up with Kapersky for 30 days, and maybe Avast Pro for 30 days. Three months later, make a decision based on what your experience is. I used Norton and hated it. Don't get me wrong, it's a good AV if you don't mind the fleet of dump trucks. I used AVG Free for a very long tim. I trialed NOD32 and Kapersky and went with Kapersky. I probably could have just as heartily gone with NOD32.

The network shield is a so called lite firewall.Yeah i cant stand norton or mcafee. Was just planning on ordering another gig of ram and a new cpu fan this weekend and i was tring to make a decision on what antivirus i was gonna go with,i prefer hard copies rather than downloads. Thanks!Ill check out the nod32 and kapersky again,if i can find some good screenshots of em.

You can compare the Pro and Home version of Avast here (http://www.avast.com/eng/av4_version_comp.html). I have used both and if you are willing to spend the bling I think it's great. It covers every possible threat.

You still need a software firewall though....
