Just got AOL broadband have not set it up yet as wanting to network a laptop wirelessly.. Is this the proper procedure ?

pc & laptop running windows xp

Netgear wireless modem router

Conect filters
Connect dsl to fiter then modem/router
connect ethernet cable to modem/router
run netgear software
connect cable when cd wizard says

Prob is what happens next does the aol screen with password ect then come up.
Once that is connected do I need to run the netgear software on the laptop or does the wireless laptop pick up the network automaticly , then enter the id number .

Thanks

You do not connect the router to the filter(s) with DSL, only each of the telephones and the dialup modem get filters.

I cannot advise on the current AOL software as we do not have AOL-supplied DSL service available in US anymore.

Yeah, the filters are for any non-DSL lines, phones, faxes, etc.

Is the modem supplied by AOL? If not you might have a problem setting it up, as some ISPs like to use there own equipment. You might need to call them and give them the MAC address so they allow it on the network.

Then you would just plug the phone line and power into the modem. Connect it with CAT5 to any PCs that won't be using wireless access. You can then run the setup software provided by the router/modem. I am not real sure about AOL though. You might need to install the AOL software and open it to login, or you might be able to store the login info on the router, and have that keep the connection up.

As for the laptop wireless connection you could really go either way. If you are not real comfortable with networking and Windows letting the software form the router guide you thorugh would probably be a good idea. Generally it will also give a bit of extra functionality that the basic WIndows wireless networking lacks.

Thanks lads got it sorted AOL does not make life easy if you wish to network, had to change the router settings to MTU 1400 or certain pages would not load also when the laptop was connected if you went online with 1 pc the other one went off , the answer is to use 2 different log on names ..
