View Full Version : Xp Boot Problem
My system is as follows; AMD Athlon 1800, 512mb Ram, 40gb HD. The problem is that I finally decided to upgrade Win98SE to XP. After the install everything seemed fine. After I shut down the computer and restarted it the next day all I got was a lovely picture of a nice green hill with no icons and no other programs running. I re-installed XP and everything looked ok again. After shut down and restart the next day, the same thing happened. Ideas please??? Thanks

Does the taskbar show up? And also, try right clicking the background. Anything pops up?

That sounds like a normal start-off WinXP Desktop.
If you had a Start button - you should have been in business.

Oh yeah, and does pressing the Windows key, (next the the left control button on the bottm-left of the keyboard), work?
Right clicking on the background does nothing, pressing the windows button does not work and the only thing that shows up on the task bar is exif launcher. If I press start I get the normal menu ie. My Computer, Documents, Programs etc but if I select anything the computer freezes. Thanks for the responses though. I wish I could get rid of XP without reformating but I can't even do that because it says the registry has changed since the install.

Did you do the upgrade version of install (from within win98), or a clean install?
I had win98 running and did the upgrade with the disc from there.

Well you are much better off doing a CLEAN install, booting from the CD. That way you can reformat the hard drive and circumvent many conflicts from previous operating systems.

How to perform a clean install. Insert your XP cd into your cd-rom/whatever drive. Reboot. Boot from the cd is prompted. Follow the instructions the wizard asks you. Anything you're unclear of, let us know. I;ve installed various OS'es a lot these days.

You may need to go into BIOS (system setup) and change your boot sequence order to boot to cd rom device first...
Thanks gents. I have an older HD laying around that I will try this with. I'll post with results.
