andrea,
you just insert the winXP CD into your drive and reboot to the CD, XP will guide you for all the rest. You can choose where to put it {partition} as well as which format (FAT32 or NTFS)
you may want to enable boot to cdrom in BIOS*

Hi Andrea:
Why can't you use a 98 or ME start up disk?? Or, alternately, your original Hard Drive Floppy??
Or you can create a DOS boot Floppy but it has no other tools on it by inserting floppy/run open Drive A select from file menu create DOS boot disk.

you could install winXP partition and format from a DOS floppy, but it's a lot of extra work for no benefit.
the winXP CD does all that for you.
I actually installed win2000 from DOS last week

Hey Sea:
Agreed but I don't trust XP to do what it says it's supposed to do and just feel more comfortable staying in the tried an true area at least when it comes to formatting, installing, and saving etc - for a while anyway
How much do I trust it?? Bought 4 Win XP for 4 PC's - 2 Win XP still sitting in unopened boxes 1 back in box unregistered - go figure

The only problem you run into using a 98 boot disk to format is if the XP partition is in NTFS. Then your DOS disk is useless for partitioning/formatting.
That is why it's better to use the XP CD, unless you ar esavy enough to kinow about delpart.exe, or Ranish, or the debug command.

Since 98Se you could use the CD to boot from and format the hard drive from there...the process has been around for a while, the only problem I have ever had with it was when trying to make a more than dual boot setup....

HI IIS:
Why couldn't you boot with CD-Rom support?? Why can't you do this outside of Windows environment and all it's clutter??
Are you saying you couldn't get the appropriate formatting utilities down loaded to a floppy??
Either way - Isn't it safer to slow down this process and have complete control over each step as opposed to having XP go off half cocked and do God Knows what to your system and then breaking its promise to restore if a problem arises??
Maybe I am too stodgy - I don't know.
