After doing some manual configuring (removing a s/w app w/o the disk) I get the Windows 98 system message "New Hardware Found Unknown Device" after establishing a modem connection. This happens every time I connect even though I uninstalled two other USB apps.

Any clues? Thanks

I am guessing that you have a USB modem?

Post back with complete specs, including computer, operating system and modem...

By the way, the Hummingbird app I accidentally installed is not listed in Belarc's "Software Versions" section but pieces can be found in the registry. Also I am using a third party internet dialer (Hawk local v.9.0). Hope this helps.

Ok, first thing boot into Safe Mode and the go to Device Manager, once there look for and remove all multiple occurances of theings like you modem, USB etc...

Have the most up to date drivers handy for you modem (follow the manufacturer's install procedure... that may mean having to actually pull the modem and install the drivers first)

I forgot to mention that I have dual boot Linux-Win98. I don't think I can go to safe mode with this as holding down Ctrl doesn't give me boot up options. I did find 3 duplicate devices which I deleted but they keep coming back (GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE 47, and 2 USB controllers). This makes sense since I get prompted for 3 new device detections.

Looks like I may have to reinstall Windoze! Arrggh. I was hoping I can maybe edit something in the registry for a quick fix.

Thanks for the help anyway.

The problem of the computer detecting new hardware upon boot and upon establishing modem connection was solved simply by reloading Windows 98. This conflict got fixed without messing anything else up.
