hi guys, I hope someone can help me. I regularly post on this forum:http://www.pprune.org/forums/index.php?

Lately what's been happening is I click REPLY, get taken to the LOG-IN page, I log in and click the button.

Then what happens is it thanks me for logging in as it processes me but the next page is back to the LOG-IN area again.

Have I been slyly banned?

Am I not logging cookies correctly? Others sign in successfully from thie PC.

This began to happen last year with a different "handle" and so I had to change. I don't think I've earnt a banning so it can't be that.

I have heard of others having this problem.

Can anyone shed any light on this issue?

I'm using Win XP here.

Perhaps the login name and password were not correct in every minute detail?
Is the "Caps Lock" on or not?
What I do to make sure they are totally correct is to use "Acerose Password Vault" [for free from www.dexadine.com/acerose.html ] to record the web address and login details, then I can copy & paste the info into the login boxes.
So even a keylogger doesn't see what is being entered, but they are bound to be correct.
You can use complex names/passwords that are different for every site and not worry about forgetting them. It includes a password generator.
Try using a new [almost identical] login identity and recording the settings as above to see if that works or not.

Make sure your PC's clock settings are correct.
Apparently, cookies are time-limited so your clock's time is important.
I once found that because of this I had to keep signing in even though I ticked the box to remember me.

Thanks for the reply. But the thing is, I am successfully logging in and then I go to post something and gett taken back to the LOG-IN page again. In between logging in and posting, I am being un-logged, if you know what I mean.

Sometimes, I log in, and am told it was successful but during the delay, I am logged out again and the next page is the LOG-IN page all over again, without even seeing the posting page.

Do you see what I mean? The details are correct but I only get as far as typing a post, at the most. When I click SUBMIT, I am disconnected.

Any ideas?

Anyone????

"thing is, I am successfully logging in and then I go to post something and gett taken back to the LOG-IN page again. In between logging in and posting, I am being un-logged"
This is EXACTLY what was happening to me when my PC's year was wrongly set.
What was happening was that the cookie was timing out, and it seems when you do certain things on a forum it must confirm you are logged in, but the details were not being retained, so I was taken back to the login window.
I think I had to delete all cookies and set the year correctly. [My recollection is a little uncertain.]

It does sound like a cookie problem... Do you have your PC set to reject all cookies?? A cookie is what keeps you logged in, so setting it to reject all cookies will cause exactly the problem you are having... If not, I would try clearing all cookies and logging in again...

If you cannot solve the problem this way, don't just create a new account... There are other things we can explore that might be the problem... There is no way for us to "slyly" ban you, so that is not the issue...

My problem [and the solution] was shown here http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=31053&page=2&pp=25&highlight=cookies

I uploaded, in that thread, the file holding the instructions I followed to fix it.
I tried to upload the file here, but the site wouldn't allow it because it has already been uploaded.

Well, the thing is, I did start using a new identity and had no problems. But this is not the first time it's happened. I had an identity a year or so ago which stopped working. Then again with another 6 months ago. Now this one.

I'm tempted to send the name and password to someone here so you can try it with your own PC... Then you can see exactly what is happening. It's really bizarre and that's not a word I like to use.

What do you think??

Do you feel lucky? :D

If you trust me with such information you could send it in a personal message and I'll log on as you.

Ok I will do it romorrow. I'm knackered now but if you're around I will send it when I haul my @rse outa bed and see what we come up with.

Of course, you'll have to undertake not to spoil my "reputation"!!!

Please contact ixl directly with this problem rather than sharing your password with someone else or starting a fourth new identity.... I have had problems with logging in from work in the past and have been able to sort them out with ixl's help... It would be a good idea to also let ixl know who your other identities are since I think he can merge them...

Budfred,
You missed the line where his problem is not here, it is at a forum for airline pilots and such.

It does sound rather strange where a username and password work for a year then suddenly problems arise. I would have thought cookies as well. But yes, the forum admins would be the first place to inquire, though I trust Sylvander as well.

You are right... I missed that... I would still go to the forum admins though....

Sylvander

I missed that too.

I'm trying to think of the possible dangers and all I can come up with is that he is taking a chance on me being trustworthy.
I could log in as him and do/say things that shouldn't be said.

Although I suppose it's possible he could post something that caused trouble and say I did it, since I have his login details [if I had them].

See, everything is a learning experience. :)

I never have to worry about such things normally, because I KNOW I can trust those close to me and they know they can trust me.
I suppose out in the big wide world it's a different story. :(

Slyvander,

It isn't so much a matter of trusting you as following the policies of a site... In the agreeement for membership for most sites, it clearly says to not give out your personal password and access to other people... Most admins would much rather be contacted about this kind of problem so that they can fix it than have the user try to sort it out independently....

Hi guys, thanks for replying. Sorry it took me a while to get back on here. Work....

Anyway Sylvander check your in-box. I'm gonna send you the details despite some people thinking it's not a good idea because:

1. I haven't used that ID for a while and now have a new and functioning ID

2. I need someone else to see exactly what is and isn't happening and maybe describe it better than I have

3. You will see I am not imagining it...

Added from a PM to Sylvander, as I seemed to be more clear than before:

As I said, I log in and OCCASIONALLY might be able to post ONE item, then the next time I go to post, maybe minutes later, it will ask me to log on again as if I have just begun browsing. So I LOG-IN then go to post and when I click SUBMIT it insists I LOG IN all over again. And again. And again.

By the way, an extra twist is that sometimes I can see my username on the list of members browsing the site even though it is still asking me to LOG IN again. Weird hey???

Do you have my reply to your PM yet?

Spent 15 minutes in there with no problems.
I used Firefox and it warns me about every cookie.
I agreed to every one, with the box to make it permanent unticked.
It certinly set lots of cookies.
And altered the already set cookies when certain forum areas were entered.

Just read some postings; didn't make any postings.
Quite a site!
Interesting things being said.

Hmmm.

Weird. Can you try posting something then and see what happens.

Try to sound like a pilot!!

I normally only post on the Middle Easter forum but am not worried about what you post as long as I'm not arrested...

See what happens after you've logged on but then try to post...??

Took a look at some of your postings.
WOW!
You are some guy!
Out of my league I fear.
Sharp as a razor and inclined to cut.
"Dumpvalve" [seems like a nice lady][and others] says you are "Condescending", "Spiteful", "Negative" [yes, but you do have a good sense of humour with it]. There have been threats to put you "face down in the gutter" had it not been for the anonymous nature of the forum.
And you have been banned at least once.

Not a cat & dog fight I would like to step into without the razor edged wit you have at your disposal.

So may I suggest that you pick a thread [and give me the link], compose a post and I'll go in and post it for you.

Still haven't hit any problems.

Oh yeah..... that!

Actually I'm really just a puddy-cat. Look at my record here. Nothing worth mentioning!

It's all in fun... or it WAS, anyway. Now I post constructive comments under another name. That banning was for something I said whilst under the influence. We've all done it!! Haven't we...???

I hope I wasn't too spiteful back in those days!

Okay, I will PM you shortly with a test post and details of where to do it!!

The posts that I read there were of a very high standard of...

of what I'm not sure...

But definitely a very high standard. :D

Didn't you find it tiring?
Or just stimulating?
