I have installed a local printer on a XP machine (Okidata ML490) and shared it. Another XP machine on the network installs the network pprinter with ease. However, when I attempt to install this printer on a W98 machine I run into trouble.
I use the add a printer wizard and browse for the network (shared) printer and select it. The next dialogue box displays a list of printers. The Okidata ML490 is NOT on the list. However I have the Okidata installation disk. I insert it and select "Have Disk". I get an error that the files cannot be found. At this point I am stuck.
What do I do now.

Dig a little deeper in the install disk for the network version of the win98 drivers.
if they are not there then visit the OKI web site and down load them from their
Make sure the shared printer and the system it is connected to are running during the install and are ready

Sometimes when loading drivers from a disk you need to specify which drive and which folder to look in rather than just search randomly. Driver disks often contain drivers for different operating systems hence the need to be specific about the folder, especially with Win98.
Just out of interest, is the list of printers presented a list of other printers already on the network? Just want to check that Win98 is actually looking at the network, not a list of previously installed printers on that PC.

The list is apparently a list of printers that can be installed. It is certainly not a list of INSTALLED printers.

OK so the Okidata is not a known printer to win98 so as you suggest the driver needs to be pulled from the installation disk. Go back to add a printer, find the networked printer and click on "have disk" then select browse. You will need to find the folder on the disk that contains the win98 drivers. Select that folder and click OK, I think (I don't have acces to win98 at the moment to confirm the actions so sorry for any slight inaccuracies)
