I recently bought a new computer with an AMD Athlon processor. After about a month, however, Windows 98SE informed me on a boot up that system.ini was missing. I ran Scandisk in DOS and found that 3/4 of c:\windows\system were lost chains along with some internet related files. I formatted the drive and reinstalled Windows, but after a while, the same thing happened. There appears to be no pattern and I have eliminated "most" software and hardware issues. Recently, this problem has been occuring every 1 or 2 days, much more frequently.

Please send any suggestions of how I can fix this, or any requests for more information on the problem.

Lost chains is one sign of a hard drive getting ready to Die..
Take it to the retailer and have them check it out / fix it

Thanks for your suggestion Rick, but I had already taken my whole system to a dealer for hardware tests, they replaced the power supply, but it got destroyed again after 2 days. I don't think it is a hardware probelm, unless they were trying to screw me.

Another major cause for lost chains is having the power shut off with out shutting down the software.( Files are not closed resulting in lost chains)
Power shut down or spontaneous reboot is normally caused by Power supply problems and or heat.
Excess heat can cause premature drive failure .

If this system is that new it should be covered by a warranty and the retailer should fix it,

If not under warranty then you should inspect it for proper air flow.
Exhaust fans working properly .
Check for air flow around the drive ..

By destroyed again do you mean the files and lost chains.
Is the power supply the correct size (Watts? )

I think Rick meant to take it to THE dealer/retailer you purchased it from.

If it is new as you say, it should still be under warranty.
