Ernie,
Where did you hear that from? Has there been a final date for support set?

I have just been told that support for 98 will be withdrawn soon. I have not seen this posted anywhere reliable to checkout anymore than I have been able to check it out for 95. Does anyone have a reference link for this.
All I know is that you can still go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.asp and search for the specific OS and download the items listed in your search. I have just done it to try it out for security updates for both Win95 and Win98 and they downloaded just fine.
The only catch that I can see is that if you are not using IE6 and want IE updates; then it wants you to upgrade(!?) to IE6 in order to download them, which doesnt make much sense if you are trying to patch an earlier version; but that's par for the course I guess.

MS supports an OS for 5 years. The clock has run out on Win95 and will run out on Win98 some time next year. NT 4.0 is almost out of steam as well.

Here are two M$ links relating to support withdrawl (the first one seems very busy and may be hard to get into).
CLIENT OPERATING SYSTEMS LIFECYCLE ANNOUNCEMENT (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=%2Fdirectory%2Fdiscontinue%2Easp )
Windows Desktop Product Lifecycle Guidelines (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle.asp)
As far as I can see all of this mostly relates to OEM-licensing and to business technical support.
I could find no reference to withrawing their 24/7 web-base of Product Downloads or the Knowledge Base - although I suppose these will no longer be updated.
So unless you are going to miss getting customer telephone or on-line support from an "individual" at M$ I don't see that the status quo is going to be radically affected. Maybe someone knows to the contrary though.

The Links I have are as follows adn are Copied from Fred Langa's News Letter
Microsoft's new "Desktop Product Lifecycle Guidelines" affect *all*
their products--- not just operating systems. See
http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2001/2001-11-15.htm#1 and http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2001/2001-10-29.htm#1 for more info.
And if you want to see when Microsoft will pull the plug on support for
*your* software, check out http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycleconsumer.asp and http://support.microsoft.com/directory/discontinue.asp .
Windows Update supports the following Operating
Systems:
Windows XP
Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me)
Windows 2000
Windows 98
Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a
Yoda - Thanks for the link will be very handy if it stays there. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
