I have a Pentium III, 1000 Mhz processor.

I'm having problems with Internet Explorer performance, and Shut down problems. I don't know if they are related, but they're happening at the same time.

Internet Explorer (5.5) Problems: program speed swings from normal operation to temporary lock-up and back to normal operation.

Shut-down Problems (Windows ME): I go through the start/shutdown/shutdown process, but the computer stays on with a blank screen. I guess Windows is shut-down, but the computer's power is still on.

I have run Scan Disk, Defrag...I have eliminated unnecessary files.

Could this be a RAM problem? I have 128 MB (127.260 MB) Total Physical Memory, but only 420 KB Available Physical Memory. Programs typically running include

Ctfmon
Mdm
Aim
Loadqm
Msmsgs
Devldr16
Navapw32
Point32
Ltmsg
Systrax
Ahqtb
Qttask
Inbox-Netscape Folder

Will eliminating some of these speed it up with doing any harm elsewhere?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Check this for the shutdown problem: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q273746

Use the IE repair tool to try to fix IE. If that does not work, uninstall and reinstall it.

Your internet problems might not be from explorer, it could be your connection. What speed internet do you have? If it's dial-up you can often get "modem hick-ups" when it will stall for a while then load as normal. These are often caused by high web traffic and wrong modem settings. If its a probelm with internet explorer, download ie6 from microsoft.

HOLD THE PHONES PEOPLE!!!!

Look at a couple of apps running at the same time:

Aim if AIM is running from start up....not needed
Inbox-Netscape Folder an open inbox all the time?
Qttask Quicktime taskbar app....not needed
Ltmsg...Lucent Tech. Soft Modem Messaging application
Msmsgs...MS Messenger
Loadqm...Loads the MSN Explorer Query Manager - a waste of resources and bandwidth

All of those access/use the internet.....

Ctfmon...CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in Office XP

The others are involved with various devices, like a Creative Sound card and an Intellipoint mouse.....

But all of the above can be started as needed instead of at start up, especially those that access the net.....MS Messenger probably being the biggest bandwidth hog on the list. With only 420KB of RAM left you are going to spend most of your time running from the swapfile, which will be many times slower than running from memory...

Since you are running ME you may want to look at some additional RAM (upto 256MB more) and possibly add this ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1, under the [386enh] section of your system.ini file (it will force ME to use all available RAM before using the Swapfile)
