I removed my AVG program from add remove programs and they were deleted. Now when I try to download from Grisoft site, it tells me there is a version on my system and istallation has failed.I have checked and cannot find the program anywhere. When I try to contact Grisoft they ask for reg. # which I cannot find. All suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

The really easy way to fix this is:
1. If you had made a backup [image file] of the c: partition immediately before installing AVG. To "Jump Back" to the way your software was before the install you just restore the backup [image].
2. Assuming you don't have such a backup, is your OS WinXP and do you have a suitable "Restore Point" made before the install?
Not so easy or certain:
3. If you don't have either 1 or 2 you might try a registry cleaner [hopefully it would find and eliminate orphan settings (an orphan AVG setting may be causing your problem)].
There is [a Microsoft] one included on the [free] "Emergency Boot CD" [EBCD] from http://ebcd.pcministry.com/
The bootable CD also includes "Image for DOS" which can backup your partitions to image files [the file must be stored on a partition other than the one being imaged], so you never have this [or any such] problem in the future. Seems like a good idea to run the registry cleaner from outside the Windows environment [after you've made a routine backup], that's why I like the one on this bootable CD.

Went to geeks.com and for some reason that site allowed me to download AVG which Grisoft did not

Hmmm, with the exception of Windows updates, I always download the installation file of any program to my C:\00tmp folder then change into "msconfig->Diagnostic Mode" [with my broadband modem powered off] to install [except when the installation program insists on going out onto the web to contact base].
I never install on the web.

Hi Sylvander,
I came across your response here
"Hmmm, with the exception of Windows updates, I always download the installation file of any program to my C:\00tmp folder then change into "msconfig->Diagnostic Mode" [with my broadband modem powered off] to install [except when the installation program insists on going out onto the web to contact base].
I never install on the web."
was interested...could you expand on why you do this (alhough i have an inkling), more specifically
Is there any diff in making a temp folder straight off a c:\ (as i have one rooted 4 levels deep?)
And what does "msconfig->Diagnostic Mode" acomplish?
cheers
anton :)

"Is there any diff in making a temp folder straight off a c:\ (as i have one rooted 4 levels deep?)"
I like to gain quick and easy access to my temporary folder. Wouldn't want to have to click on other folders to dig 4 levels down. Then I'd be forced to remember the pathway. Because I put a double zero [a single zero would do, but a double gives the option to make up to 99 numbered folders] at the beginning of the folder name, Windows puts it at the top of the folder system.
"what does "msconfig->Diagnostic Mode" acomplish?"
This is like Safe Mode, but with CD-drive access.
So there are no programs running in the background. So when the installation program gives a reminder to shut down all running programs, there are none running.
Also, I normally save a copy of all downloaded installation files to a CD-RW disk [and make a wri file explaining where and when it was got and what it does], and then later [perhaps if I need to reinstall] I might copy a program [or more] from the CD to the 00tmp folder, and install it [or them].
I also use "Simple Backup" in diagnostic mode to make backups to CD-RW disks.
Has the small disadvantage that when I restore one of those backups and then boot the PC, it takes me into diagnostic mode [because that was the configuration backed up], and I need to reboot back into normal mode.
When in diagnostic mode, there is no firewall running, so I disconnect the power cable [partly pull out the power plug from the modem socket (enough to disconnect), but leave it in the socket. So there's no modem connection.
