Thunderbird slow

Hi all,
Yes, when i first start Thunderbird, it'a about a good 60-90 seconds before it begins loading emails from the server. AVG is running to check the emails..
i don't think there are any large data files to be loaded.
any suggestions?

Perform the following test:

1) Download your e-mail measure the time.
2) Send 7-10 e-mails to yourself. Make some large with attachments
3) Remove e-mail protection from AVG
4) Download your new e-mails. Measure the time.

If the time from 1 and 4 are not that different, it's not AVG.
