Firefox users, how often does this happen to you:
the internet connection is working but when you click on weblinks/ bookmarks the Alert Box pops up saying the website could not be found and you have to continue clicking until it works?

You're not the only one with this problem. It happens to me very occasionally. Maybe every couple days, and usually just once or twice. I've noticed that it is more likely to occur when I am streaming in a lot of net traffic at once, from several different pages.
When I was using a particular file sharing program, I found info about XP sp2 having a limit of 10 half-open TCP connections at one time. This was supposedly in the interest of security so worms couldn't propogate as fast. There is a tool out there to increase this limit by modifying your tcpip.sys file. It's only available from one place though, and I have decided that it seems too risky to me.
Is there anything you can identify as common when you see this problem? Things like level of traffic, dns service on/off, Hosts file entries, etc?
I am running XP Pro sp2, ZoneAlarm, Avast WebScanner, and MSAntiSpyware. I've got a pretty big Hosts file (about 300k), and my DNS server is set to my ISP's. It doesn't happen often enough to be a huge problem, but I am curious about the cause of this too.
EDIT: I am running Firefox v1.0.7. That probably matters, but I don't recall the frequency of this in earlier versions. It obviously wasn't often enough to be a big issue. I've stopped using Internet Exploder, but I don't remember seeing anything like this from it either.

that happens too when doing a Yahoo/ Google search. i think the problem started from 1.05. i have not use IE for a long time but back then there wasn't such a annoyance.

What kind of connection do you have? This is the message you get when FF can't find the page, e.g. no internet connection exists. I think you need to look at your setup as I do not experience this at all.
Need a whole lot more info then what you are providing.
PC specs
OS
RAM
ISP
etc....

I've used FireFFox since version 0.8, I think. I now use 1.07. Whenever I have this problem, I immediately check 1) using a different browser and 2) using a different machine and OS. In every case, it has turned out to be either 1) my ISP (Comacast--called and confirmed the interruption) or 2) the website I was trying to get to was down or overloaded.
This is what bothers me in your post:
(none are running zonealarm or anti-virus scan; router)
Are you saying you have no AV or firewall at all??? If that's the case, you're asking for trouble. Good FREE solutions are available, use them.

Dunno how relevent it is, but there's one other thing. At least some of time I am going to abc.com, and it is corrected by putting "www" at the beginning of the url.
As I recall, it is pretty common to default an unscoped domain reference to "www" on the dns or web server but it is sometimes overlooked. Possibly some browsers are configured/designed to automatically check there before returning a 404, while some aren't?
Just a thought.

I recently set up a web site with a new domain name and was given two versions of the domain name, one with www. at the beginning and one without. I do not think all browsers necessarily allow an address to be entered without the www. My site covers both eventualities. www does not seem to have the same importance it once had as sites can now lose the www or are preceded with ww2 or other combinations.
