XP Gremlins

Hi everyone.
I have XP Pro (Clean Install) and 98% of the time
everything is fine. On rare occasions, when the computer
is first booting up, it gets stuck one the "Black start
screen" The one that says "Windows xp pro" and has the
scrolling blue bar. (Before windows actually loads completely, but
after the bios beeps and all that). The scrolling blue
bar just stops. Even on my typical sucessful boot, I
noticed the blue bar hesitates when it is scrolling but
then loads fine-Is this normal? Anyway, The strange thing
is that the only way to get out is to hit the restart
button on my computer- at which time, it boots into
options in safe mode. I choose "Start windows normally"
and everything boots up just fine as if nothing was ever
wrong! There is no record of any conflicts or any other
device problems. Any Ideas? As I said, this only happens
on rare occasions. Is it just one of those freak
unexplainable windows things that I should try to ignore
since it happens so infrequently? Or does anyone have any
theories. Booting in safe mode for diagnosis ( Loading
drivers etc. one at a time )does no good because
everything always checks out OK! Windows Gremlins?

Do you have a NIC in this machine....it sounds like sometimes it is timing out looking for a network connection.

Hi MJC- Forgive my ignorance, I assume you mean a Network internet connection. Sort of- I do have a cable modem with a Router, hooked to two computers in the house. Although my sons computer never has this problem (Also running XP). So, I have a WAN (my isp), and sort of a LAN (Our two computers)but we dont really have a network in the sense that we share files or anything like that. The router is just so I didn't have to purchase another IP address. But yes, I do have an "Always on" internet connection. ( Which isn't really "Always on" thanks to technical problems my cable company has from time to time http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif You think that could have something to do with the intermittent problem? I think that XP may be hanging while looking for something that it can't find, which could be your connection.

There could be other sources, but since it is not very frequent or repeatable, then it would be very difficult to trace down.

A quick check for dust etc, clean all grills, fans, etc...possible power supply problem...

Thank you for your thoughts mjc- I just found this site and really like it. Always amazes me when I see someone like you with 4000+ posts! I for one am glad you guys are around. It's great to have people that are willing to help other frustrated computer users when they need it! After reading some of the other weird problems people are having, I'm not going to worry too much about mine. I'm sure I'll be back eventually with something more serious though! Thanks again.

go get {{read the instructions)) and use bootvis (http://www.majorgeeks.com/article.php?sid=664)- supposed to tune XP to boot in under 30 seconds.

again, please read and follow directions carefully- you will need to reboot several times to complete the adjustment.

Thanks sea69! I downloaded the (Zipped) file. I'll check it out later. My computer actually boots fairly fast ( Except when it has that strange problem), but I'll check out Bootvis anyway. Kind of swiging twords what mjc was mentioning I my self use Pro and have a linksys ethernet Adapter that is the one I use also have a Broadcom 4211 iline 10 network Adapter had to disable it on account of the same as you describe.
