This is the problem that I have. I've got a satellite connection and when I have to do any large downloads they start chopping down my download speeds after a certain amount of time so that eventually I'm looking at dialup speeds. So I need something to split my downloads (free) so I can get what I need. I'll be needing Fedora for school 4 to 5 disks 650mb each  .

I have always like File Splitter and Merger from http://www.splitter.vze.com/
There seems to be a problem with the English section so I can eMail you a copy of the English version if you want one if you PM me where to sent it to - its only 28KB.
I can see using a file splitter to divide up a large file that you already have, but I do not know how a person would start and stop a download to create split files with one. If you interrupt the download, will it not just try to start at the beginning again?
A download manager like GetRight (http://www.getright.com/) may be what you need. It is said to resume downloads from where they were stopped/interrupted. I do not have experience with the program, but someone else here likely has.

Reid has correctly surmised that the app I was talking about was an actual file splitter not a download manager.
For a spyware free download manager you could consider Sun's Download Manager from http://www.sun.com/download/sdm/download.xml
You will need Sun's Java if you dont already have it installed.
