I hope I get some feedback from anyone here. I have a laptop that is running XP Home SP2, which I understand is a problem in itself, but the dern thing has started taking 5+ minutes to boot. Then when you do finally get past the login for the user, it takes another 5 minutes to load, then if you try to open anything it takes forever to respond and open. I think the owner tried to edit the registry when for some reason he lost his printer driver. So has anyone else experienced this situation before? Can anyone point me in the direction to find out what the problem is? Anyone, please, this is playing havoc with my nerves.

Welcome to thehttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!

Is this unit Internet capable? If so, I would suggest doing an on line anti-virus scan: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Do you have the XP disk?

I am trying to get it out on the Internet but so far have been unable to. I ran the AV software that is installed on the pc and it was clean. I ran Spybot and it was clean, but when I was glancing in the registry I saw Cydoor listed. Then I ctrl-alt-del and found CashBack and MediaGateway in the processes. So far I haven't gotten anything resolved because the pc is moving so slow it is crippling everything. I went back into the registry to look at the Cydoor entry again and now I can't find it. Fill me with the knowledge cause know I fear I need to tell my friend that the pc is too far gone to fix.

We need a closer look at what's happening.
Please download http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip
Copy it into its own folder, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan and save log".
If you cannot get net access, then use an other computer, and tranfer the file using a floppy. use the same procedure to save the log.

When the scan is finished, the log will open in Notepad. Do Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

First, from Add/Remove Programs, uninstall Newnet/newdotnet. If there is no entry for it, an uninstaller can be found on the newnet website (http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html).
Also uninstall P2P networking.If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'.
P2P Networking is a totally useless Kazaa add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns.

Have Hijack This fix all of the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and hitting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

Thanks David, I will do all steps as soon as I get home. I appreciate your help and will post back results asap. Should I do this in safe mode or normal?

Normal mode should do it, but we shall see when you post your followup Hijack this log.

I haven't posted the Hijack log yet, but will asap. Evidently the things I deleted didn't help since the laptop is still creeping by. When I try to open My Computer, it actually has to look for it. You know, the whole flashlight thing. I will get back on it this evening and try to post back tomorrow. Don't forget about me please.
