I just installed a new motherboard and worked fine for a little but it would heat up and freeze then I relized that I didn't have any thermal paste on the heatsink but it got really hot. I got the thermal paste on it now but the computer won't boot up at all, it gets no signal and there is no beep from the speaker and the hdd light and the cdrom read light are on the whole time also all of the fans work. I tried clearing the cmos jumper but that didn't work and the computer is hooked up just like it was when it was working before. I have a esc ks57a boar, 80 gig hd, 1.4 athlon tbird. I need to know if this is because the cpu is fried and I need a new one or maybe the motherboard isn't working.
Thanx

It's very possible that the CPU is toast.
The only way to tell for sure is to either swap it out, or have it tested.

I have no way of testing the cpu but I just tried another motherboard and it did the same thing so does that mean that it's probably the cpu?

goober2003,

When you eventually put thermal paste into the mix...did you notice anything unusual about the CHIP? I've seen pictures of some fried ones and they look fried! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

Unfortunately, the sypmtoms you descibe don't paint a very positive picture about the future of your processor! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

The top of the cpu did have some black on it near the main ic in the center so it looks like it was fried there. I'm going to order a new cpu and I hope that will solve all of my computers problems.

for what it may be worth, i managed to fry a 1.2ghz t-bird a few months ago. on the underside of the cpu there was a "white sticker" and there was clearly a brown burn mark on it.
