I recently purchased a PCCHIPS M811LU. I've heard that it would be a good MB for a beginner builder. I have been doing a bit of research on compatibilty. I was wondering if anyone new if the Athlon XP 2800+ 266mhz cpu is compatible with this board. Also I'm just looking for a good VId card that someone else has had good luck with. I was thinking about using a GeForce 5500 256 mb agp, but i don't want to spend the money on it if it doesn't work. any help will be appreciated. thanks

Welcome to the PC Guide Forums!! :D

According to the website for that mobo (http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWeb/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?MenuID=24&LanID=2&DetailID=235&DetailName=CPU%20Support) (CPU support) that 2800+ won't work with that mobo. But I'm a little confused about why exactly you chose that mobo, and what source told you it would be a good beginner mobo? That old thing uses the ancient (in computer terms) VIA KT266A chipset. I used that chipset in my first build way back in 2001! That's a little old for a modern system. Are you looking to build an entirely new system?

I was told by a friend of mine that has used the board before. This would be the first computer i've built from the ground up. I'mm looking for a good low budget system. It's too late to return this as i bought it off ebay. However if you could suggest another amd board for under $40 that's newer and can handle a more powerful cpu, i'm open for suggestions.

As for a $40 mobo, uh... maybe, like in a bargain bin or something. But basic mobo's usually cost $70-100, so... I don't know if you're gonna find something in that price range. What's your total budget for this project?

i'm just purchasing parts as i go. got this mb for next to nothing so i'm just going to go with what i have for now. it is the first computer i've built so i don't want to spend to much and risk ending up with an expensive paper weight. i'll just get the duron 1.4 that is supported. it should work for what i'm doing. if i do come across a newer mb/cpu combo at a good price i'll pick it up. i'm curious as to why pcchips doesn't have the athlon 2800 266mhz as compatible with any of their mb's though. it's not even in the list of cpu's. they have the 333mhz.

I've got a biostar m7vig socket A. The most it would support is an amd xp 2500+ and required a bios update. I'm sure someone can explain the technical reasons, but you're not alone.
