I recently bought a computer and everything seemed to work fine, but once I got it home the mouse won't work. It has a mouse with an adapter on the end so it will fit into the COM1 port. When I start the computer it gives me a dialog box stating "Windows did not detect a mouse attached to the computer. You can safely attach a serial port mouse now. To attach a mouse to a PS/2 mouse port, you must first turn the computer off."

Someone told me that during the move something may have gotten lost in my BIOS. Can anyone help me? Please!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
By the way, I am running Windows98.

Thanks in advance.

Dear Fisher5:

Run, don't walk, back to where you got the computer. You SHOULD NOT have to fix/troubleshoot problems with a computer fresh out of the box. Call the place first and see if they can talk you through it. If not, take it back.

If you want to troble shoot, try this mouse on a different computer and another mouse on your computer.

I guess that I forget to mention that this is a used computer, not a new one. I have tried several different mice on this computer and this mouse on my other computer, the mouse works fine on the other system. No mouse has worked yet on this computer. So any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

The first place I would check is the mouse itself. Do you have a mouse for a different computer that you can use. Are the pins on the plug and/or adapter bent or broken?

Check out the following from the "PCGuide" itself and see if this helps you resolve the problem.

The mouse is not working: it is not recognized by the system or the mouse drivers (http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/comp/mice.htm)

Have you tried a PS2 or a USB (if you have USB ports) Mouse the serial ports may be disabled in BIOS. Mine are and so is my parallel port because I don't use them and don't want them taking up IRQs. You may want to check in BIOS settup and see if they are disabled.

There are no USB or PS/2 ports on this computer. I am having a terrible time trying to figure out how to make sure my BIOS settings are supposed to be for the mouse to work. In the BIOS nothing actually states that it is a "mouse" setting.
Please help..... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

Actually, the pins for a PS/2 port are there, I have ordered the port but it has been on back order for over three weeks now. It is a 5 pin single row port for an EPOX motherboard, obviously very hard to get a hold of. Any suggestions will be appreciated. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

For a serial mouse you need to assign a COM port to it, usually COM1. So in Bios you need make sure that COM1 is on and that is about it.
