I'm looking into buying an nVidia 6600 GT from newegg, but it says it requires a 350 watt power supply and mine is only 250. Is the 350 absolutely necessary? And if so, then can anyone recommend a good PSU that I could get? I don't really know which brands are reliable or not. Thanks,

Graphics cards chew up power for breakfast. Whilst I haven't seen the power consumption rating for your particular model, a 350W supply should really be considered a minimum now.
I tend to use Antec PSUs when I build machines, but others have differing opinions. Antec are certainly reliable, but you should check Saphalline's sticky to see if other recommendations are availalbe.
If the price difference isn't too great between them, go for a 450 instead of 350 - the extra headroom you have will mean that yoru PSU can both cope with what you have now, and have some breathing space when you make further upgrades.
I consider a stable PSU, a quality case and a quality motherboard to be the most important parts of a PC - get those right and everything else should fall into place.
