Java is program used by many applications. It should be left alone. You don't absolutely need it, but it is very useful. It's one of those things you use often without realizing it.

It is out of date though. It's at update 5 now I think. And it is important to keep Java up to date as it can be a security issue if lacking the latest patches.

To update it go into your control panel clink on Java plugin and click the update tab and check for updates.

Or, go here to download the latest install package. The easiest way I think. http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Once I download the upgrade should I delete the previous updates or is that not possible?

You can delete the previous version via Add/Remove Programs.
The current version is Java 1.5 Update 5.

Thanks I removed the previous versions of J2Se. Now I see there is a bunch of updates from Microsoft inc. security and software from Jan 05 to Oct 14th. Can any of these be removed?

No, leave them there.
They show up in Add/Remove to allow defective patches to be removed and regain function.
