Hi guys,

Yesterday, I was working on the PC when our electrical power flickered off for only a second or two, but enough to make the computer reboot. This was during a lightening storm (I was just reaching to turn off the PC when -- zap), BTW.

Since this incident, the USR 56K FaxModem says there is no dial tone. The line from the modem had been plugged into a surge protector (a fairly expensive one). So, I tried plugging the phone line directly into the modem, but still no dial tone. There is a dial tone on the line - at least it works with a phone and was working fine until the power outage. I tried the Windows 98 diagnostics in the device manager and the modem responds. I can hear it dialing, if I disable "wait for dial tone".

Does this sound like I need a new modem?

Other may have a better responce but my old USR 28.8 would do something simular when the power went out while i was online..i would actually have to remove the modem from the Device Manager shut down remove the card reseat it and rebootup and let Windows reinstall ..although one may not have to go this far it worked and i stuck with what worked..lol.Mine however wouldnt even detect a modem when it happened. You can try that it may have goofed a driver on teh sudden shutdown..if that doesnt help post back.

Yes, try reinstalling the modem. Internal or external?

If it is an external, totally power it down and uplug it.

If you let it finish dialing when you disabled "wait fo dialtone" does it connect?

Before I saw your messages, I bought a new modem and installed it. It's working fine, but maybe the old one is still good and just needed to be re-installed physically. Duh. I'll have to not throw it out until I can check.

Yep, give it more shot and if it doesn't want to work after physically reinstalling it then file it under "T".
