I was looking for a good heatsink for my pentium 4 2.6GHz (socket 478), northwood. does anyone have any suggestions or used a heatsink that they really love? price isn't a huge issue...

One word: Zalman. They're the Cadillac of HSF units. I use this one. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118113) It big, it's heavy, it's 100% copper, it's efficient, it's pretty :D If you have the room and the box isn't moved much, it's a damned fine choice. There are other versions that are a blend of copper and aliminum that are cheaper.

The latest Zalman in this type of line--more expensive-- is this. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118223) It's lighter, has a smaller fan, all copper, built on a different axis, and is also very efficient.

With both of these models, check the compatibility with your mobo by going to the Zalman site. Just becasue it's compatible with a particular socket, doesn't mean it will be compatible with all motherboards, mainly because of size.

Zalman is money well spent. Period.

i looked at zalman. they are good, but i actually wanted a heatsink without a fan attached, because my computer case won't be able to fit the extra fan on top of the heatsink. anyone know of anything else. i see stuff on newegg, but some don't have reviews, and i know people here can review a heatsink they have.

i actually wanted a heatsink without a fan attachedAre you going to use a side intake fan to blow over the heatsink? What type of active cooling are you going to use?

Maybe you're looking for something like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835109122)?
