I am running a dual boot system. Win98SE and Win2k. Modem works fine on Win98se but just recently stopped on Win2k. When trying to create a connection to my ISP, Win2k tells me can't create an account, try the make new connection. No matter how many times I try no go. I am using IE 6.

Any suggestions.

hi rl348, welcome to Pc Guide.

1. have you downloaded wk2 drivers for all your hardware?
2. go to your ISP and download a dialer setup exe, i use this instead of putting on all the ISP software.
3. is the modem ok in Control panel/ Systems?
4. have you tried to retrieve your account?
others will come.

forgive me, im young. Jiggy

when you install the software for your ISP it can also retrieve your account instead of making a new one.

also on win98 go to your ISP home page and look for dialer setup.

you say that theres no ISP software on wk2, so what are you using to make the connection?

forgive me, im young. Jiggy

Jiggy, over here in the States, at least, there are still some ISPs that do things the old-fashioned way....configure the dial-up account manually or with the connnection wizard. You don't really need any "software" from an ISP to make a connection, really all you need is your username, password, phone number, and if you have email with the account the email server name (or address). Also need to know if there are any specific settings that the ISP requires...but that kind of falls under the "tweaking" category.

rl348, what is the exact error message you are getting?

Error message: Can't create internet account. Try double clicking on dial up networking and click on new account. That is what I have been doing. NO go! I have done this many times in the past due to the fact I have been upgrading my systems myself. I have never seen this error message before. Should I log on as a different user and try creating an account under that name?

That could be one option...what are you logged in as now?

You may not actually have the permissions needed to create the account with whatever you are logged in as now.

I have administrator status as I am the admin. Even when I log in as admin same problem.

Have you tried to reinstall dial up networking?

Are you running any kind of firewall software?

If so try disabling it.

What was the last thing installed/done before it stopped working?

Also check the system logs/event viewer to see if yuo can did up any more info on what the error may be.

I have been using a firewall for years. Nothing was installed. No changes were made from my day to day routine. I will try uninstalling the firewall and see what happens. It (Win2k) just stopped allowing me acces to my ISP or Internet.

Thanks for your help and keep asking questions.
Could it be a security issue or a services issue.
Should I check out the services under admin tools?
Thanks
