I installed a new cd rom to my computer recently to replace the old one. However, after I plug in everything and switch on the plug,my computer is on directly without pressing the power button and most importantly, the computer doesn't boot and there is no 'beep' too.Besides,my monitor also turning to standby mode and my computer also couldn't switch off through the power on/off button.I tried to disconnect all the hard drive, floppy drive and cd rom and later on reconnect them, but the same problem occured. Can somebody please help me to solve this problem??

Another questiion,I wish to find out the proper ways to clean the dirk inside the computer.

Did you make sure the power cable was removed from the back of the computer before installing the CD-ROM drive?
Are all cables and wires connected the same as prior to the install?

We might need some more detailed information to really have a good idea what the problem is, but I can think of a couple of things to check until we get some system info.

Just taking an educated guess, this sounds like the Master/Slave jumper is wrong or the cabling has a problem. Look on the back of the new drive, it should have a set of 3 jumpers, usually labeled MS, SL and CS or similar. Those mean Master, Slave and Cable Select respectively. Which one you need to use depends on how the system is set up.

OK...it looks like this might be a lengthy post...

If the CD ROM is on the primary IDE channel connected to the same ribbon cable as the hard drive:

Set the jumper on the CD ROM to Slave (SL) and make sure the colored stripe on the ribbon cable is oriented toward the #1 pin on the drive, which should be marked.

If the CD ROM is on the secondary IDE channel:

This one depends on whether it's a single or dual drive channel. If songle, set the jumper to Master (MS) and check the cable as above. If another drive is attached to the channel, it can be either master or slave, depending on which position it is in. Master is usually the end of the cable, slave on the middle connector. Don't forget the cable orientation.

Then...if the CD ROM is slave on either channel, chances are the Master drive, if it is a hard drive, could have a separate jumper setting for Master in a dual drive situation. That jumper must be set correctly as well. Check the drive manufacturer's website, they usually have jumper settings posted somewhere. Look for settins for Master, Slave, Single drive, Master or Slave in a dual drive configuration. (Master w/ Slave usually)

Cleaning:

I use a camera brush or soft makeup brush to clean dust out of the computer, and blow it out with compressed air at fairly low power. Canned compressed air works well too. Pay close attention to the heatsink on the CPU and all fans. Also the vent slots on the power supply. Be sure you turn the computer completely OFF, and unplug it if it has no main power switch. Any metal retaining rings on a brush can make contact while in use, and tat could cause problems. Ground yourself on the chassis before unplugging to avoid static electricity.

Avoid a vaccuum cleaner, it can suck jumpers off the motherboard. If using a brush, be careful not to knock jumpers off or bend soldered on components. Check all wiring after cleaning, make sure everything is securely plugged in and correctly oriented if it was removed.

If you still have problems, post some system information. Mainly CPU speed and whether the CD ROM plugs into an IDE controller or the sound card.

I agree that you have to check the settings on the CD Rom to make sure it is jumpered correctly.
