View Full Version : This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Hi, just reinstalled windows XP home after a crash, Ive got most things working accept the audio. I get the message can't start and an error message This device cannot start. (Code 10)....can anybody help? Ive tried uninstalling but no joy. I have a fujitsu siemens p4 2.2 it came with a recovery CD-ROM.

Is there a recovery cd plus a utilities cd? If so, the sound drivers would be on that.

If not, you may need to try Everest Home or Sisoft Sandra to find out what you have for an audio device if onboard, even looking on the motherboard for the audio chipset and gathering the code from that and downloading the drivers (hopefully) online.

Or is it a separate soundcard?

Its an onboard sound card - the driver is sis7012 (ac97) but ive tried everything I can think of to get this working.

The onboard sound adapter may be bad. Installing a sound card is one option.

You might want to try removing the device using Device Manager in SAFEMODE. If it shows up there are more than one instance be sure to remove all, reboot, and let Windoze locate the new device. You can then point it to the location of the drivers if it cannot automatically find them...
