I know that this might not be the right place to ask this question but people are telling me off for putting it in other treads. Is it possible to actulaly run a programme on the ipod video since its got a 60 gb hard drive(its plenty of space). I was never sure though because someone told me u can earase the whole hard drive and put what u want on it.
Is it acctualy going to work or is the prossesor just not powerful enough. What about memory? Can u add ur own in some possible way or change the core chip?
Dont worry i'll never try it but i just want my question answered.
All this has made me think of the pocket pc... Isn't the ipod like a mini computer?
The Ipod is a media player
It can be formatted and refilled.
But the only program I know that will work in it's chip is Ipod's own programs
I know you can remove the drive to replace the POS Battery in the old Ipod
But beyond that it's normal Apple
You can't do much else

Hi!
:)
As far as running your own application, or an application you have downloaded, I would think not.
As Rick said: The i-pod is a media player.
The primary reason for calling it a media player, is it is dedicated to playing media files, and nothing else. You can think of them as essentially a single-tasking device. The internal circuitry would not support other functions, unless they were included in the design phase of the product.
The i-pod music-only, being a MP3 player, contains a ingenious, but simple interface. The "OS"(using the term loosely) of a i-pod is not like a modern OS such as Max-OS X or Windows XP. It's sole purpose in life, is to be able to access the micro-drive, find MP3 files stored on the micro-drive, and to be able to stream that data to the CODEC inside the i-pod, which takes the data from the MP3 file, and turns it into music that you hear in you headphones. It doesn't care about anything else.
The i-pod video is a different beast, but the concept is the same as the i-pod music-only. The "OS" of the i-pod video knows how to access the drive, read the files, detirmine what kind of file it is, and play it. As for other applications on the i-pod video, I don't think you could easily do it, although, it might actually be possible with hardware hacks...
Generally, as the OS of the media-player is only interested in looking for files that it knows it can play, it will simply ignore any files with an extension it does not see as being able to play.
It's an interesting question though, and i'm going to see what I can find out about i-pod video hacking on the net.
:D
I'll post back here, if I find anything interesting.

I wouldn't believe it even if I wasn't in and out of this site all night.

Like most digital audio players, an iPod can serve as an external data storage device when connected to a computer.

Installing or running an operating system from such a "drive" is probably, (at least theoreticlly), possible as long as your PC truly supports booting from USB/Firewire. In actual fact (even though PCs that purport to support USB booting) they will mostly only allow booting to USB Floppies and CDs and not to USB HDDs.
Actually it is possible to replace the Apple iPod OS with a Linux based OS on the iPod. Once that is done it is possible to run certain other applications on the iPod that wouldn't normally work, but the choices are limited. Basically the biggest limitations would be the processor and memory from what I can tell. It is really just designed to play music, which doesn't require much power.
Don't believe it? Check here (http://www.ipodhacks.com) .

ACtually, witho ut formatting or harming your iPod's hardware, you can drag and drop files to it. Connect it to your PC, wait for iTunes to load. DO NOT EJECT IT!
Shut off itunes, go to "My Computer" and your iPod, (it should be the name of your iPod under a removable disk icon). Drag and drop w/e files to there.

i guess if someone would find a hack it would actually work then. Also i heard that apple is trying to come out with something called linux for ipod or something like that? What is it all about?
