when installing the windows 98 boot disc, we continue to get the message REQUIRED PARAMETER MISSING it's sitting in A prompt. can anyone help me with this? since microsoft dropped help on windows 98 we are going blind here trying to reformat it. if we are doing something wrong, can anyone set up a partial run through of what we should be hitting to use the disc to reformat?
thanx

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums.
Do you have a Windows 98 CD?
Do you know the manufacturer of the hard drive?
Do you have a Windows 98 boot disk?

REQUIRED PARAMETER MISSING
Would result, on a floppy, from an incorrectly typed command at the a:\> prompt.
What exactly did you type and enter to produce this respose?
PS
Entering ...
a:\>format:c
...would, for example, produce this response on a Win98/ME startup diskette.
The correct line would read ...
a:\>format c:
... if the intention was to format the c: drive.

yes, we have 98 cd and 98 boot disc, and the hard drive is listed as ktx brand. my fiance is trying to salvage this system from a friend. i am not home, we are doing this across the phone line, so im not sure what exactly she typed in to get that response, but after doing the a:\>format c: its now saying volume cerial number and sitting at the a:\> prompt again. my last 2 systems have had ME and XP, so i havent used 98 in years and with not being in the same place as she is at the moment i cant see what she is doing. Any idea what to do now at the a:\> prompt now that it has formatted? Sorry to be a bother.

OK it says volume label 11 characters, enter for none. when she hits none it goes to the Volume cerial number and then a prompt, than back to the volume label again.

When she gets the prompt to enter the volume label, tell her to type a name. I use master or storage or a similar name.
