Hi,

I noticed that my monitor would go black for a second every so often, but now that I'm trying to play Civilization IV, it does it frequently.

I have an ATI Radeon 7500 and a Dell UltraSharp 2001FP and I have them connected via the DVI cable.

So is my video card just too weak to deal with the graphics? Or should I try fiddling with some of the settings?

Check the monitor's connector for any problems with the pins.

If they look ok, then make sure the monitor's cable is securely connected.
If it is, then wiggle the cable. If the problem happens when you wiggle it, then the cable is bad.

If no luck with the above, then connect a different monitor to your system, or connect your monitor to a different system.
If the problem stops with a different monitor connected to your system, or it happens with your monitor on another system, then your monitor is bad.

If your monitor is ok, then reseat the video card making sure it's fully seated, and clean any dust off its fan and heatsink.

If still no luck, then remove the computer's cover, and run an external fan on the card.

If that does not work, then swap out the video card. If the problem stops, then your card is bad.
