i recently installed McAfee security center, personal firewall, and virus scan from an offer from Comcast highspeed internet. a few days ago i started my computer and i noticed that the system tray icon (an "M") was black. i moved my mouse over it to reveal that mu virus scan was disabled. i righ-clicked it, went to virus scan, and clicked enable. it said it was enabled but the M still stayed black. i right-clicked it, went up to security center and clicked it. nothing happened. so my virus scanner and my security center are not working. can some1 help me? :(

There are several infections that can disabled security programs and they may have already been there when you installed the programs... You did not say what version of Windows you are running... If you have Win2000 or WinXP, use Ewido:
Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido trojan scanner (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/):
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
Check "Perform action with all infections".
When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
And then post a HijackThis Log:
To run HJT, extract it to a permanent folder such as one
you create like C:\HJT. Close all open windows and
browsers and make sure that all programs are enabled if
you use msconfig. Run it and Scan, then Save the log.
When the log window appears, Right click to Copy it, open
your browser and come here to Paste the entire log. Do
not make any changes until it is checked since most items
are either benign or essential to the computer.

Post the Ewido log and the HJT log... It may take several posts to get them posted...

The Problem with my McAfee anti-virus program, which I got 15 months ago, is that when I run a virus scan from the security centre it scans though to 23,330 files without ever finding a virus but freezes my PC on the file “C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\wmvdmoddll”
This happens every time I try running it.
I’ve looked in on McAfee’s new support site and found it a bit of a mine-field.

This is a long dead thread... If you want help, please start your own thread and post a HJT log as described in the post before yours...

I asked this person to start a new thread... Please do not give instructions to continue in the old thread...
