i have faced a strange trouble..
i am using amd athlon 2000
and win 98se.
due to some problem faced after i installed a freeware DJ softare for sound effects, i unsinstalled that software and i reinstalled the OS and after that Win media player started to malfunction in such a way that when any file is played the playing rate is fast and sound follows the video playback and is garbled and follows ups and downs.
i tried checking any conflicts in device manager , but none..found.
one more problem associated is this that when the fast playing file in media player is paused, and replayed, system hangs and had to be rebooted ...
.. however no problem is seen in playing audio mp3 files in winamp.
but video playing is absolutely failing.
..please help me somebody, i will be really thankful to you .

Uninstall all media players, and reinstall just one of them, and see if that works.

Hi
:)

Welcome to the PC guide!

I had this problem once. I fixed it, by simply hunting down another media-player software. I don't really like MS MP that much myself...

Download the freeware ZOOM player standard - it should play just about anything you have, and is extremely configurable...

...i haven't used MSMP for many many months...

Zoom Player Standard (http://www.inmatrix.com/download/zp451std.exe)

Right click this link, and select SAVE TARGET AS/SAVE LINK LOCATION to download the .exe installer. File is only 1MB, so won't take long to download.

Please let us know how you get on.
:)

When you reinstalled Windows, did you install all the drivers for the system again? If not, that would be your problem. 98SE doens't have the best drivers for hardware of that level.

"i uninstalled that software and i reinstalled the OS and after that Win media player started to malfunction"
To avoid being stuck with such problems in the future...
As you move forward in time from day to day, make backups of your OS & program files partition when all's well.
Then if you hit ANY kind of problem, or even just suspect that all's not well, restore a chosen backup to make the software "jump back" to an arrangement you like.
It helps if you keep a written log of software changes; installs, uninstalls, backups, restores, major configuration changes.
When something goes wrong, look at your log, choose the backup you think is best, and restore it.

In this case you might have restored the backup made just before you installed the "freeware DJ software" [it's a good idea to wait to install things until you've just completed a routine backup, or else deliberately make a backup before you install].

My Drivers 3.11 = www.zhangduo.com/driverbackup.html [15 day free trial]
Also use this to backup ALL your drivers to a location of your choice [I put mine on a packet-written (DirecCD) CD-RW disk].

thanks a lot for for all those replies...
as for update i saw that the FRAME rate is actually running high than desired and is varying around 30 to 32 FPS instead of around 25 which it should be, that is causing the problems of vidoe playing.

i will be trying the possible ways suggested by you all.
SKI- ...
i have uninstalled win media player 9, but how do we uninstall default media player that comes with it?
Saphalline-
when i faced it initially, it was the case butafterwards i tried uninstalling and reinstalling all drivers from the CD , and still no success.
Sylvander-
you are right , and i promise to myself that after patching up this debacle i will regularly follow your advice.
hey Mini-me-
thanks for the wellcome, i have downloaded the Zoom player, and will try it , but the questions is not about using this player as much as it is about why the problem is existing, and more so why is it existing for video playing only , that is why i seek refuge at PC guide.
any way thanks a lot for fantastic response folks.

If you think it might be a configuration problem you could use c:\>scanreg /restore to restore a configuration backup automatically made on the 1st boot of the day you introduced the problem.
That might not work if any program files have changed since then.
As a last resort [when all else fails] you could make a backup of your C: partition, then reformat C: and rebuild your software [reinstall Windows and your Programs etc].
If you do that, make backups at key points [when Windows and all drivers are installed, then when all Programs are also installed].

I don't suppose you keep "System File Checker" [sfc] up-to-date?
Personally I've never found that to be particularly helpful, but it's worth a look.

What vid card are you using? Or is this onboard video? Try going into the display driver and check for hardware acceleration options for video playback. Fiddle with them to see if they change anything.

Also, keep in mind that the latest & best-working drivers for any device are always found online. Using a driver CD from say, 2 years ago doesn't rule out a driver problem.
