I've got a problem with a PC which is running Windows XP Pro.

On starting the PC, it goes through BIOS and immediatley lands on a screen which tells us that the file "Windows\system32\config\SYSTEM" is corrupt or missing. The page goes no further, and the escape button is the only way to get the computer moving. It reboots after that is pressed and lands upon the same screen every time.

I tried to boot from the windows XP CD to try to repair the installation, but it instantly tells me that there is no HDD connected. - OK. I opened the case and found that the PC is telling lies - there certainly is a hard drive connected, in fact I checked the BIOS and saw that it not only sees a hard drive, but it can tell me all about it (number, size, type of connection [SATA], etc.).

So I Googled for info and got a few forums telling a similar story and most answers were similar to my first actions. I was directed to Microsoft's site,

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545

I'd go through the reccomended procedure if only it would recognise the HDD. Most of the solutions I've come across suggest that there is no proper fix which will erradicate the problem entirely. Only thing I can surmise is that the PC has an undetermined hardware problem which will cause the file to go missing from time to time.

Do you know what I should try next?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Read that this problem happens because some computers/MB's were supplied with faulty IDE cables.
Make sure your HD's IDE cable is securely connected.
If that's ok, then install a different known working IDE cable.

1. How to make a free “Smart Boot Manager” floppy
http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=41498
This makes it easier to boot a chosen drive [particularly the one holding the EBCD].

2. How to make a free EBCD bootable CD
http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=41485
This has a number of useful utilities included including "Image" [for DOS, by Terabyte] & "File Manager".

You could use 1 to see if the HDD is being detected, then use it to boot from the EBCD and use "File Manager" to look at the files on the boot partition on the HDD.
At the bottom of the EBCD thread I show how to copy the Windows installation files from the CD to a partition [other than the boot partition] on the HDD and run a "repair" reinstallation from there.
People have previously reported that this works when an attempt to install from the CD has failed.

Thanks again for the direction to the EBCD.

When I tried to make the CD, I downloaded the .exe from a PC with the net, but no burner, so I put the .exe onto my dongle and took it to another PC. There, I opened it, ran it and created the image through the DOS procedure. When it was done, it said press any key to continue. This I did, the window closed and I couldn't find the .iso anywhere. What should happen at this point?

As far as the original problem goes, the person concerned was leasing a Dell through her work and has called their "support" team to get the ongoing problems sorted. (I've repaired this PC on more than 1 occasion - blue screens of death etc...)

Cheers

"the window closed and I couldn't find the .iso anywhere"
The "Ebcd061p.iso" file is made in the same "ebcd-0.6.1-pro" folder holding the "makeebcd.exe" file.
You can move the "Ebcd061p.iso" file to any convenient location of your choice either before or after you "File->Create CD from image file...".
I have three customised copies stored.
Each subsequent copy has yet another customisation added to the previous as follows and shown in the image below:
1. PowerQuest Partition Magic added.
2. MaxBlast 4 added.
3. PowerMax 4.21 added.
