When I log off my user name for windows xp and want to return to the log in to sign in with a different name, the computer always freezes. It doesn't do this when I just switch user however without logging off. Any suggestions? Thanks for any help!

Welcome to PCGuide!
It sounds like the PC is hanging on closing some service or stopping a process. This could be a sign of a malware infection, among other things. If you're curious about what's happening you can look at the computer event logs:
Start/Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer
When you have the Event Viewer open, the left panel will show three items: Application, Security, and System. You can look at the logs in each of those and see a clear indication when something has gone wrong.
Next, we should rule out malware--meaning viruses, trojans, worms, and spyware. Download HijackThis. (http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/) It is a compressed (zipped) file, so you'll have to extract it. Make sure that you actually extract HijackThis to its own folder--not the desktop and not a temp folder. DO NOT run it from within a zip manager (Winzip), as no backups will be saved. Close all open programs including your browswer. Now go to the directory where you extracted HijactThis and doubleclick the program icon. Click Do A System Scan and Save A Log. Your system will be scanned and a log created. Now return to the Forum and reply to your original post. If you had closed it, open the Log in Notepad. The log will be in the same directory as HijacThis and will be named hijackthis.log, unless you changed it. Highlight the entire contents. Copy and paste the contents of the HijackThis log into your post. Do not attempt to fix anything yet. Wait for help. Budfred or Classic or one of the other HJT gurus will be along and let you know what if anything is bad.

You have a few issues. Besides the malware, you're running two third party firewalls, Norton and ZoneAlarm, and you may even have the Windows firewall on. That by itself could/would cause issues. The nature of your log is such that I recommend you wait for Budfred or Classic to respond. You do have malware and they'll help take care of that. You also have "personal choice" software that I find questionable and indeed objectionable, but I'll leave the recommendations up to our malware team.
