I just got the update this morning, so havent had time to really play with it something i don't understand? I know i hav cookies dis. and high security, but when i made this thread where it say's "the Pc World" i get this setting next to it in Bold letters?
mdisplay.cgi? The PC World, looks just like that in the header box? or if i go away and come back it will say something different there like
isplay.cgi? The PC World kind of strange. it does have a little pop up window that say's privacy settings have affected this web site? guess I'll have to play around with it but all in all pretty impressive.
mdisplay.cgi?The PC World

That should be the folder Icon before the forum title .
I don’t get that on my end and I have security set to high.
However I also have cookies from this site enabled.
In your case it may just be a cgi script error. ?
Edit
I just looked at the page .
What you are seeing is Forumdisplay with the Forumd missing.
It’s part of the HTML command line for the page

Am i missing something here with ZA I'm still getting this even when i visit oter sites? i shut ZA off and it goes away? if i let za stay at default it does it if i change the settings it's still there it's like it changes all the time if i go to MCSE Live which is another trouble shooting channel some time it won't even load all i get is the script. There's got to be a setting I'm missing. If you look in the testing forum at the last entry i made this morning you'll see what i mean. that is what the section looks like in the colums.

yoda- what I did was to experiment with my network until my machine and the one I serv to both were able to do what I wanted them to and still have maximum security.
this included the "Privacy/cookies/ad's" section.
for instance- on some sites that I frequent I have found that these safegaurds need to actually be turned OFF in order for the site to work at all.

Hi All,
Got flagged by ZA pro this morning about the upgrade.
Running at default at the moment, seems ok but I'm not sure what settings to use. I presuming that default is safe enough.

Good evnin' folks,
Since we're talkin' about ZoneAlarm...Do any of you know why I can't use ZA on high security with a home network? I connected two computers, both win98se. Internet connection sharing, file and printer sharing. ZA notified me that I had to lower my security settings to medium in order to use it with the network. How come?
I've looked over the Zone Alarm site and realize this is just the way it is but...how come? Is there a way to use a home network with ZA on high security?

Hi Sea,
Trusted?
------------------
Peace and Love, brothers and sisters. Peace and Love
Steve
Trusted is the setting you have to add for each node on your network.
Check your Log in ZA for address from each of your nodes that were blocked.
Ensure that these are in fact your Nodes and Not from the Internet
.
In ZA use the options on the Left side of the screen . “Firewall” is the one you need.
Then click the “Zones” Tab at the top of the screen.
You can then use the Add button on the bottom right of the screen to add your nodes as trusted
This will tell ZA that your Nodes are local and are trusted to access the server / router .
You will need to know the address of each node and the subnet information
Another ZA setting for home networks and those who use AllAboard to share the internet connections.
I found that when Allaboard loaded on the server it was being blocked by ZA and the Nodes were not being updated.
This showed as a routed Block in ZA.
With the server address To the node address.
This was causing AllAboard to report at startup Not Connected
However ZA still allowed the connection when the node was in the trusted list.
The only error was the Not connected reported by Allabaord
This is not a problem until the server changes something in the address .
Using a dialup or cable modem and not having permanent this could cause a problem when the IP is changed
To solve it.
All I did was add a trusted flag to the server / node access

Are you saying that since you upgrade to ZA pro 3 you have stopped getting continual flags?

Hi ErnieK http://www.btinternet.com/~kfhickmott/pubdirectory/scotland.gif .
No not flags, pop up adds when surfing.
And when I shut down my browser, I had loads of screens to shutdown.

Ernie- you can control the "flags" more with this version.
you need to see it, give it a try FREE for 30 days and see, if you don't like it uninstall and reinstall a previous or free version!

Has anyone tried the updated LinkSys firmware (http://www.linksys.com/download/firmware.asp?fwid=1) that provides ZoneAlarm Pro "hooks" into it for added security? I'm hesitant about updating firmware in anything that's working properly, ever since I tried updating my motherboard BIOS and everything quit working (went back to the old BIOS version and everything was OK).

Hi All,
Why does ZA keep asking me to add my isp to trusted.
I've done it three times, but every time I go online the ip changes.
Thanks,
kfh.

Maybe it's referring to your IPS's Domain Name Server addresses (which should be fixed) as opposed to the IP address your ISP assigns you whenever you dial up or log-on if you're using DHCP(?)

kfh, are you sure that your ISP should be in your trusted zone? That means that anything coming from them (i.e. the internet) is automatically trusted. I don't really know how ZA works with dynamic IP's, so I might not know what I'm talking about http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif, but I thought the trusted zone was for local network nodes where no malicious activity would be coming from.
John

John is correct.
ZA asks if it is ok to include the new IP every reboot, you use the arrow to put it in "internet zone", not "trusted"
as mentioned above the DHCP asssigns a new IP every boot.

My aunt is running XP and has enabled the Internet Connection Firewall feature (I'm her technical support, and I made sure it was done). How much more does the free version do? Would it be worth her while to use Zone Alarm without paying for the pro version? She has a cable modem, but turns her computer off when she's not using it (between 30 mins and 2 hrs a day, I'd guess).

The free version is fine the new paid for is real nice, and as long as she has high speed cable modem your on all the time! Does she have the option on the modem to "lock out" I use an Ericsson Piperider, which if i shut the computer off and engage the pipe lock they cannot easily bypass the modem. Not Impossable! But Not worth the hassle you would have to go thru time wise. You would have to do some serious Hacking.

Right, but is the free version either a)so much better than the built in ICF that it's worth the headache or b)significantly better than ICF and just as transparent? I know you're thinking "what do you mean, headache?" My aunt doesn't know how to move files into folders in explorer and has no idea why or when she would want to. We've mastered clicking, the scroll wheel is next. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif She called a few nights ago asking me what "LOL" means - having to make decisions about her security and vulnerability to attacks would distress her greatly and I'd be called over to check out the slightest irregularity.
But I'm confused, Yoda. Are you telling me that a computer that's been turned off (not standby or hibernate) on the other end of a cable modem is vulnerable? Even if it's only to a hacker of extraordinary cunning, I don't understand. The memory is discharged, the hard drive can't spin... Bypass the modem to what?
------------------
Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once.
sea69
03-14-2002, 09:29 PM
a) yes
b) yes to the first part and no to the second.
ICF does not stop OUTGOING packets from programs that may get called to start without your knowlege.
Are you telling me that a computer that's been turned off (not standby or hibernate) on the other end of a cable modem is vulnerable? Even if it's only to a hacker of extraordinary cunning, I don't understand. The memory is discharged, the hard drive can't spin... Bypass the modem to what?
if someone has already inserted by some means a trojan or exe. file into your computer- then if you have your cable/dsl modem on and "in sych" and your computer OFF, it is possible (in many different ways) to "wake up" your computer. A set of commands could make it appear as if your computer is turned OFF but not, and then further commands can do just about anything else they are directed to- delete files, run other hidden programs without your knowlege- and the most highly achieved hacker wouldn't even let you know he was there.... then there are the malicious ones who take advantage of this knowlege.. GH -(and others here) could easily expand on this general topic(not the malicious part.}
