My internet(cable modem) only seems to work for a few seconds right when i turn on my computer. I can download about half of my homepage then it quits. This problem has happened after I reformatted about a week ago and I am completely stumped on what to do. My roomates computer connects just fine to the internet. I have checked his default gateway, DHCP, subnet mask, and DNS servers and they were the same as mine, so my computer is reading the network. I went into command prompt and tried a few pings. when I pinged my IP address it came up fine with 4 responses. I pinged default gateway and all 4 responses timed out. I pinged DHCP and all 4 responses timed out. I pinged DNS servers and all 4 responses timed out. I pinged my homepage IP address (131.204.2.251) and there is no response. There is no response when I ping www.auburn.edu (my homepage). I have gone into settings and manually put in all the IPs for DNS, DHCP, and default gateway. I have power cycled my modem and router. I have plugged my computer directly into my modem. I have completely updated drivers. I have turned my firewall on and off and tested all tests with both settings. I have ran my antivirus scan and there are no virus. I ran a winsockFix program. I went into command prompt and tried ipconfig /release. Also tried ipconfig /renew, and ipconfig /flushdns. I also tried netsh winsock reset catalog and netsh int ip reset.log. I have gone into Internet Options and changed it to automatically detect settings. i don't use a proxy server. nothing has worked Any ideas? its strange that it works for a few seconds than quits. If i time my ping of my homepage just right, i can get 2 responses and 2 losses. please if anyone can help, i would really appreciate it.

Is your roommate connecting through the same modem?

If so when you reformatted are you sure that you installed the right drivers for the NIC?

What IP address do you get when you do Ipconfig? DHCP and network access are not the same thing. Are you on a school network? Did you replace the NIC when you reinstalled the OS?

Is their a router? Does the modem do routing? Does it do filtering? Assuming all you said is true, I would look at the modem itself first and check the configuration. It sounds like something is shutting you down or the NIC is malfunctioning. Check the modem config then, if no go, I would replace the NIC.

Variable:

I get teh IP: 68.190.59.48. I am not on a school network, I use my cable company. What is NIC? I didn't replace anything when i reinstalled teh Windows XP. Our apartment has a cable modem and a switch is what im told(I thought it was a router but I gave a friend teh model number and he said that is a switch....my roommate and i pay two different fees for the bill I guess. we pay our apartment rental office for our cable) the modem should work fine since my roommates internet works fine. where do i check the modem config. why would my NIC not be working when it worked just a few weeks ago before the reformat.

Thugly:
I have tried reinstalling in a different pci but no luck.
