Hey,

I can't restore the system in Win ME. Normally the system makes every day one or more system-recovery points. But since a few days nothing happens anymore. I can't either go to a early made system point. Also I can't make system-recovery points by my self.
Does somebody knows what the problem can be ?
Thanks.
Hans.

Hello Hans,

I realize that this was one of the links included in the one that Yoda provided, however, THIS ONE (http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q290700&FR=1&) requires the download of a patch. Just wondering if you've downloaded the patch? There might be other problems associated with not having done so.

WHYZMAN, KFH,
I've tried a lot of things but nothing seems to help. The system always gives the same (dutch) warning: " Systeem herstellen kan geen herstelpunt maken. Start de computer opnieuw op en voer systeem herstellen opnieuw uit". (Systemrestore can not make a restorpoint. Restart te computer en do the systemrestore again).
Maybay are there missing or corrupt files in windows/system/restore ?

The closest I can get to understanding Dutch is this not quit sure what that message is saying

Systeem manufacture kan geen herstelpunt maken. Start de computers opnieuw OI EN more voer systeem manufacture opnieuw uit ". (Systemrestore CAN emergency make A restorpoint. Restart of width unit computer EN DO the systemrestore again).Sounds like to me that it can do a system restore If you could translate the message to english Might beable to see exactly whats going on here.

Hans, go here and do a little trouble shooting on the system restore
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q306768

there are a few things here that can be tried to see if you can get it to work properly. But you do actually have to try them let us know as to what you have done and we'll see if we can't get it to work here.

Hans,

Good to know you downloaded the Patch! I seem to remember before I loaded the Patch myself that I could not use System Restore.

I would suggest that you follow through with Yoda's Q306768 link. Make sure you have the recommended settings, sufficient disk space etc.

I don't mind you contacting me...however, please keep the rest of the folks following your thread updated as to what you've done so they will be able to take all facts into consideration for their follow-up suggestions. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hoi,
I've followed through Yoda's Q306768 link. I've found by the Troubleshooting Error Messages the link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q303354
I want to try "method 1" but I don't onderstand point 3:

Locate the following registry key:

NOTE : Your system registry may not contain the following entry. If it does not, try Method 2.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD\VxDMon

My system registry contains the entry. When I read the NOTE, I don't know if I should go farther or go to Method 2.

Strange ! What should I do ?

Hans.

Hoi,
Is there a possibility to remove "system-restore" and to re-install ?
Hans.

Hmm I personally have never tried to just remove system restore don't really know if it can be done without messing up the (Batch files)? Now you can just plain turn it off,Right-click on the My Computer' icon on the desktop
Select Properties
Click on the Performances tab
Click on the File System button
Now click on the Troubleshooting tab
Check the Disable System Restore box

you can alway's use scanreg /restore, and scanreg /opt
to fix some problems.
Have you thought about reformating and starting from scratch to see if you can get sys.rest. to work again? or get the "GO back" program

In windows Me

From the Start menu, click Run.

The Run dialog box appears. In the text box, type: Scanreg /restore, and then click OK.

A Windows Registry Checker dialog box appears. Click Yes.

A Restore Registry dialog box appears. Select a time that the Registry started correctly, usually the previous day. Click OK. The registry is restored.

The computer restarts.

__________________________________________________ ________________________

It is also possible to start to the SRCD and run the command.

From the Start menu, click Shut Down. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart or Restart the computer, and then click OK.

As the computer shuts down and restarts, place Disc 1 of the System Restoration Kit into the CD/DVD drive.

When the computer restarts, select option 2. Boot from CD-ROM.

On the Startup Menu, select option 1. DOS Prompt.

At the D:\DOS prompt, type: C:, and then press the ENTER key.

At the C: prompt, type: C:\Windows\Command. Press ENTER.

At C:\Windows\Command, type: Scanreg /Restore, and then press ENTER.

Select a date before the issue occurred, and then press ENTER.

Press ENTER again to restart the computer. The Registry is now restored.

Yoda,
Thanks for all the information.
I know that the restorefunction worked perfect the 5th. of march. Can I go back so far in the registry or rather not ?

Hans.

Hans, I would "BACK UP any and all that you want to keep" before doing much of anything that includes registry and all files and stuff of a personal nature. In the worst case scenario (you could loose it all)and have to start from scratch. On the second of scenario's it cannot hurt to try worst it could probobly do is not allow the return to the point of the 5th.
