Does anybody know if one could use a slocket, or slot to socket adapter. I have a pIII 550 and may want to upgrade to a p4 next year.

Not entirely sure what you're trying to do, but it's almost certain that you won't be able to use a P4 on an existing board next year.

Like the previous poster mentioned, A P4 will most likely have a different pin configuration that will require a whole new generation of Motherboads. you can only upgrade with the PIII's line of processors
I just purchased a few weeks ago an ASUS P3V133 Motherboard. It was designed for a PIII Slot 1 Processor. I picked up the ASUS 370 - 133 sloket adapter because the processor I got was a PIII 733 Flip Chip PGA configuration (socket 370?) Intel is moving away from the slot 1 because of its costs.
Anyway, I havnt put it together yet because I'm looking for a graphics card at the moment. However check the MOBO manual to see what the max speed your mobo can support. It should also recommened what ASUS slocket card to use.
Intel isnt thrilled about such adapters but if you don't use the slocket recommended by your MOBO mfg, and anything happens to the processor, the warrenty is void on the processor. Go to Intel's website to read up on slocket adapters.
