Anybody got a quick answer for me?? I'm working on an ancient(?) motherboard (Intel 82430 VX), with 4 SIMM slots and 1 DIMM slot.
Can't find a reference. Can I mix and match the SIMMs and DIMM?
Do all of the SIMMs have to be full before using the DIMM, or empty,
to use the DIMM? Max memory for this board? Any other info, and
possibly a URL for further data? Not available on Intel site. TIA

Welcome! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif Found 40 site references to Intel motherboards with that chipset by typing in "intel 82430 vx motherboard" at HotBot (http://hotbot.lycos.com). Here are a couple to get you started:

Blue Max (http://www.bluemax.net/docs/motherboards/FREE/F72spec.htm) - has photo that sounds like what you described.
Intel Motherboard Manuals (http://x86.ddj.com/intel.doc/intelmotherboards.htm)

If you modify the HotBot search with the BIOS type and any identifying numbers on the board, you might be able to narrow it down even more.

Hope this helps!

I'm using a board now with an Intel 430 FX chipset, the number is the chipset ID not the motherboard model, several companies used the 430 series chipsets. The 430 VX series will only cache 64MB memory, and if you install more it will slow the machine down.

It is definitely not recommended to mix SIMM and DIMM memory, it will usually cause problems. You can use either 72 pin SIMM or 186 pin DIMM, but not both. Either one should be empty to use the other.

Write down the BIOS ID string, which is the long number at bottom left of the screen while the memory counts up, the [Pause] key will hold that screen, and go to my site posted below, and look in either the BIOS links or Trish's, the top link, and you'll find links to identify the motherboard and maybe find a manual. The manual will have info about what memory can be used, and how much etc. Wim's BIOS (http://www.ping.be/bios/index.html?http://www.ping.be/bios/numbers.shtml) is probably the best place to start.

Hardware Upgrade (http://www.hwupgrade.com/chipset/intel430vx.html) has the specs on the Intel 430VX chipset.

I had a link to an article concerning the 64MB memory limit with Intel's 430 series chipsets, but I can't find it. Search through the PC Guide for memory and you might find info there.
