I have a very old computer:

Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
CPU: Intel Celeron-A 500MHz
Motherboard MSI MS-6160
Power ATX
Windows 2000 Prof.

When I activate APM the computer will not shutdown instead restarts with blue screen and a very short time message "IRQL not less or equal" . And when i deactivate APM and try to shut down i get a massage "It is safe to turn off the computer now". But i have to press the power button for some more seconds to really turn it off. how can i solve this problem?

The BIOS setup for Power Mangt. is;
Power mgmt User Define
PM control by APM yes
Video off Method DPMS
Modem Use IRQ 3
Reserve IRQ 9 Yes .....

The delay is usually 4 secs and is set in theBIOS, but you can set the BIOS to power off immidiatley by changing this. This would enable you turn of the computer at first contact with the power button instead of waiting.

Normally you press the DELETE key after you start the computer. (check your desktop/monitor during bootup for the exact key needed)

This link will take you MSI site for the manual which will allow your to see exactly where to look in the BIOS.

My oldest PC [even older than yours (Dec 1996)] has similar settings to yours as follows:

Power mgmt = User Define
PM control by APM = yes
Video off Method = V/H SYNC+Blank
Modem Use IRQ = 3

"V/H SYNC+Blank" means "Turn off vertical, horizontal scanning and blank the screen".
