Does it have to be under $5000

If it does I went over budget big time!

I suppose that's up to PC, since he or she is the one who started this.
But,
what your $5000 dream machine would be composed of.
sounds to me like you have to buy everything.

I'm having a blast with touch screen monitors, the more you research, the neater they get! What the heck, I've got $5k to spend!

It's looking like I might have to back down to twin 7800GTX's (darn!), and back off the RAM, a little!

Does it matter where I get my componets from? (like eBay instead of newegg).

Stick with Newegg. You can never tell the quality of EBAy sellers and products.
Look for a AMD 64 X2 CPU, nForce 4 SLI MOBO, 7800GT graphics cards, 2 Gigs of RAM, 200+ GIG HD space, 500+ watt PSU, dual layer DVD burner.

I suppose that's up to PC, since he or she is the one who started this.
well, i am a "he", and the main rule is a $5000 rig, stick to newegg, and if there not big, go to and other reliable store (ebay does not count for reliable)
and you cant tkae your old rig or your grandmothers rig either
just decide what you dedicate your system to, and rig it like a mad man with $5k

keep the thread active!

Stick to the budget. You can always create more threads for other budgets if you want.
thanks for keeping the thread ...

K I'm really new at all this high end stuff because I've never had a reason to look at it. But after no research this is what I have come up with. I know that most of the boxes out here will be used for overclocking, with nice cooling systems. Well I think that a computer like this has no need to be overclocked and the extra cooling money should be put towards quality parts.
So here it is:

Ok, let's lay down some more concrete rules for this thread (and feel free to re-do your proposed systems if you want - no point penalties :D):

1) - Peripherals are not needed. You can leave out the monitors, speakers, mice, keyboards, printers, whatever! These parts are very user-specific and are not included in "the box". If you wish to include them, consider them "free". ;)

2) - Parts that help in OC'ing can be included (like liquid coolers) but OC'ing is not required nor is it encouraged by the forums!! (Gotta get that disclaimer in here. ;))

3) - No leaving out any core/box parts!! You can't start a system without a PSU or a hard drive. You must include these parts by default.

4) - You may include any OS for "free". Even if it costs money. It's not technically part of the box, but it is needed for a working PC and we are working on a budget here. You may even include multiple OS'es for free. If your idea of a dream machine is a triple-boot system, by all means, share it with us. But the OS is free.

5) - You may resubmit any of your current configs as per these rules. You may also submit multiple configs if you want to approach this from a different angle (A64 vs Opteron vs Intel for instance) but all configs from the same member must be different enough to be considered a different system, and they must be labeled as such. As in "Config #2 - Dual Opteron" or something like that.

As for all your configs, they're not bad! :D Lots of fun stuff, and I think this is a great thread for getting some of the more esoteric and unusual components out in the open. I especially like the fact that a lot of you thought of dual-socketed mobo's right away - quad-core, baby!! All of these are pretty awesome in their own way. Keep the configs coming! And let's start a $10K thread with the same rules, shall we? ;)

I've got some ideas for this thread that I'm working on. Should be interesting...

Not exactly my own personal dream machine, but just to give you guys a taste of what real CAD and 3D creation power looks like. ;) I also had trouble keeping this beast under budget. The Intel version will look very similar, except for the mobo, CPU's, and RAM. With a $10K budget, this thing would rock! As it is, it's pretty good. Fast primary hard drive for the OS (probably XP Pro, x64 version, Server 2003, or Linux) plus a somewhat healthy amount of storage. Just under a terrabyte of total storage. The CPU's are standard fare for this type of system - two dual-core Opterons, but the budget limited the speed of these processors to 1.8GHz. I also had to settle for standard registered ECC RAM in order to get 4GB in 4 sticks - so that's a set of dual-channel RAM per CPU. The vid card is the best CAD-class one I could fit into the budget, one of ATI's FireGL series. Darn good card for Maya, lightwave, etc. The case is pretty cool because it's a server case (needed for those large EATX server mobo's) and it has wheels! :D It also has expansion card retention thingies, which is useful for those large CAD vid cards. The PSU speaks for itself, although I would have loved to include the 1KW monster big-brother version. That just leaves the optical drive - I went for the NEC because it supports higher-speed DVD+R DL writing speeds for about the same cost as the comparable Lite-On drive.

That rounds out the package. Any thoughts?

saphalline,

I need a clarification on the rules. You stated that the OS is free, but does that include all software?
I'm asking because I'm going the media playing/video editing route, and as you probably know the software is necessary beyond the OS, and can get into BIG bucks.

saphalline
12-08-2005, 07:41 PM
Yeah, let's consider all software to be included "free". If that's OK with everyone else. I'm a hardware junkie, so I prefer to look at just the hardware. ;) Anyone else can chime in, too, though. Just try to keep it within reasonable levels. Ie, don't expect us to just roll over for a $5000 piece of software!

Ok, Intel-based CAD Workstation is ready. Newegg is back up and running!

Ok, here's another one. A "flashy gaming system"! :D Lots of cool things to look at! And when you look at the price of all the colored accessories (including the CPU fan and case fans) it pales in comparison to the high-end hardware. Less than $200 for all the lighted stuff, so this is well within the budget of normal mortals as well as Dream Machines.

Also note the HP LightScribe optical drive. Not the best DVD burner admittedly, but it just adds to the flashiness of the system. :D

Check it...

This doesn't make any sense first, the mobo is dual 940 and the Opterons you picked are socket 939 second, the 1xx series Opterons cannot be used in a dual configuration.

Just a couple things:

Socket 940 means registered ECC RAM. You can't use normal unbuffered RAM.

And the Thermalright heatsinks should really have some fans on them.

Other than that, it looks good! It really is amazing, though, when you realize how limiting $5000 can be. Just amazing...

240.00 USD = 320.25 AUD

Plus postage of around
80.00 USD = 106.75 AUD

This is the typical minimum quoted cost I've found for shipping things overseas from USA via cheapest USPS option. International couriers cost more. Some places automatically charge extra insurance costs for packages over a certain value.

Total =$AU 427

Plus whatever charges customs chooses to throw on top once it arrived in this country.

Once you work it out, shipping from overseas doesn't automatically make it cheaper just because the price looks so much less.

that should do it... why am i paying $325 bucks for ecc buffered ram?!?! so i cut down to 2 gigs... i guess i can redo this rig and fit four, id have to reconfigure the hard drives but to my knolledge 2 73 gig raptors in raid are faster than 2 36gb raptors thats why i went with that.. and im hoping that this is possible with this rig

final question: will 2 gigs of ram bottleneck dual opteron 250's with dual 74gb raptors at 15k rpm in raid? anyone??
The biggests lessons in life were born mistakes!

saphalline

why am i paying $325 bucks for ecc buffered ram?!?!Because the Opteron's have an onboard memory controller, and that memory controller is configured to only work with ECC registered RAM. The Opteron's will not work with "normal" RAM used in desktops. Plain and simple, that's all there is to it.

final question: will 2 gigs of ram bottleneck dual opteron 250's with dual 74gb raptors at 15k rpm in raid? It's possible it will be a bottleneck because that's only two sticks of RAM right there. Each Opteron is capable of its own set of dual-channel RAM. So you're only giving one stick (single-channel) to each Opteron. It would be better to go with 4 x 512MB sticks at that point. Or in general, two sticks per Opteron.

That's why I chose the big brother of that mobo - for the onboard SCSI. Then I didn't have to spend money on a PCI-X SCSI card. Granted that PCI-X SCSI card is better than the onboard SCSI, but it just doesn't fit in the budget. However, if you keep going with what you have, it would be an awesome base platform for the $10K thread! :D

Anyone else have a configuration they'd like to share? This is turning into a good learning thread as well as a good dreaming thread.

Just a quick question I want to go with the Tyan dual xeon mobo (i think that's what it is) but I want to use dual 2.8 dual core xeons.
The unfortunate part is that they are not sold on NewEgg and was wondering what you thought about me doing this? Here are a couple places that have it:

I have even found that they make a 3Ghz dual core too. too bad it's like $5000 I'll have to wait for the unlimited thread LOL :p

See, no ones going to give you a hard time here :) but at a glance those are pretty pricey, and my second opinion would be to check out this article:

Usually its best to choose your processor and build the pc around it
so choose wisely what your core is made out of and what price you wanna pay for it.

Thx a lot this helps out greatly, AMD did a nice job killing the Xeon's. Wouldn't be surprised that if those numbers are even close to right that you'll be seeing a lot more name brand servers with AMD's

That looks like a very interesting system. I like all the peripherals, very nice additions.

Just one question, though. Why get the SLI mobo if you chose an ATI vid card?

Well, most of the newer and better mobos are SLI, or better to say the SLI mobo's have better stability and offer better options... So i thought i cant go too wrong there.

Its alright, save your thoughts, your day is coming aswell... as far as the monitor... i took a peak at it a few day ago... i was watching movies on it, surfing, then i woke up ;) 5,500??? to much for me right now... we will be increasing the budget for bigger dreamers though.. so stay tight..
